The following quote is from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 15, “Revelations of the Bridal Chamber.” Copyright 1991 by Diana Gabaldon, all rights reserved.

“‘You dinna need to be afraid of me,’ he said softly. ‘I wasna going to jump on ye.’ I laughed in spite of myself.
‘Well, I didn’t think you would.’ In fact, I didn’t think he would touch me, until and unless I invited him to; the fact remained that I was going to have to invite him to do considerably more than that, and soon.
I eyed him dubiously. I supposed it would be harder if I found him unattractive; in fact, the opposite was true. Still, I had not slept with any man but Frank in over eight years. Not only that, this young man, by his own acknowledgment, was completely inexperienced. I had never deflowered anyone before. Even dismissing my objections to the whole arrangement, and considering matters from a completely practical standpoint, how on earth were we to start? At this rate, we would still be standing here, staring at each other, three or four days hence.”

I’ve been rereading parts of Outlander (or Cross Stitch as my copy is called) I never cease to be totally swept away by DG’s writing. I love Claire how she is portrayed in the TV show but I also like the slightly acerbic humour of the Claire in the books.

She is funnier in the books but the producers/writers decided not to use these scenes. At the very beginning when confronted by BJ Claire in the series spat in his face. In the book, she screamed so loudly straight in his earhole that he jumped as if a hot wire had been run through his ear. Later on when Claire was crying for Frank and Jamie comforted her he gathered her onto his knee so she could sob on his chest but when it became apparent he wasn't as tired as she thought, she scrambled up from him in embarrassment. However, I don't know how they could show that on TV!! When I read the books, I envisage Sam as Jamie but I can't envisage Cait for Claire. I imagine her as a much smaller woman with lighter hair and a totally different demeanour. Bossy and bustling about.
