Happy Friday, All in Lallyland!

The best, guaranteed to work, way to get some time alone is for me to enter the room, sit down, and say "I've been thinking." Everyone mysteriously has somewhere else to be. The bathroom is a favorite. It usually works when I'm talking to one of my kids on the phone, too. "I've been thinking." "I just remembered, I forgot to pick up my daughter from school. Gotta go, Bye." Never fails.

One would think (there's the 'think' word again,) I'd avail myself of the alone time to be constructive in some way. What actually happens is I get so excited about 10 different things, that I start them all but finish none. I have self-diagnosed myself with adult ADD, with a touch of OCD, but only about certain things. How the bath towels need to be folded and put away. Making beds. Putting silverware in the dishwasher- just a few more things, but not full-blown OCD. Can someone be ADD with just a touch of OCD?? I won't discuss this with my provider because I don't want any more diagnosies (I think I made that word up. What's the plural of diagnosis? I don't know. Hence....diagnosies.) We have online access to our charts and when I pulled up my records, I felt like I should be close to death, or institutionalized. There's a list of things I've never been seen for. One time, my provider asked me if I had heartburn. No. Once a year, I take a Tums for heartburn. Maybe every two years. In my chart, I have a diagnosis of GERD. And apparently I've had surgery on my right ankle, but I must really be getting confused because I don't remember having right ankle anything. I've told the office many many times that I don't have GERD and my right ankle is fine and always have been. They're both still listed in my chart, along with 20 other things that aren't really issues. I'm not sure why I'm such a mess. Apparently, because I stop and take a 30 second break while climbing a long hill translates into congestive heart failure. Ummmmmmm.....

So, I don't complain about anything in the Dr's office unless I'm doubled over in pain or coughing up blood. We have lovely chats about gardening, pets, different uses for coconut oil... I make sure I don't cough, get heartburn, or limp while I'm there. The two issues I really DO have are last on the list. Isn't that dandy.

The following quote is from 'Outlander,' by Diana Gabaldon, chapter 9, "The Gathering." Copyright © 1991 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

Dougle MacKenzie was the first man to advance to Colum's platform. The small rostrum gave Colum enough height that the brothers met face to face. Dougal was richly dressed, but in plain chestnut velvet with no gold lace, so as not to distract attention from Colum's magnificence.

Dougal drew his dirk with a flourish and sank to one knee, holding the dirk upright by the blade. His voice was less powerful than Colum's, but loud enough so that every word rang through the hall.

"I swear by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the holy iron that I hold, to give ye my fealty and pledge ye my loyalty to the name of the clan MacKenzie. If ever my hand shall be raised against ye in rebellion , I ask that this holy iron shall pierce my heart."

He lowered the dirk, kissed it at the junction of haft and tang, and thrust it home in it's sheath. Still kneeling, he offered both hands clasped to Colum, who took them between his own and lifted them to his lips in acceptance of his oath so offered. Then he raised Dougle to his feet.

[> I'm not sure what makes a blade Holy. The relationship between Colum and Dougal is very complicated and I find it intriguing watching the interactions between the two. -- Betsy BFS, Thu, April 20 2023, 21:27:21

[> [> Making an oath on one's dirk happens several times on the book. Maybe because they all carry one and at the haft it resembles a cross. There's also iron under the hearth to protect the home. I'm also particular about towel folding, putting things away, etc. I think it's a normal part of maintaining the home. -- kgp, Fri, April 21 2023, 12:01:09

[> Betsy, this has been a terrific week of sibling relationships in the Books. Collum & Dougal are certainly intriguing. I'm also particular about a number of things around our house - towel folding, laundry sorting, where things go on the kitchen counters, etc. Some stuff though, doesn't phase me. I will say that I've gotten more particular as I've gotten older, maybe because with the kids grown and flown, it's not such an impossible battle! -- DianaH, Fri, April 21 2023, 13:02:39
