Sorry I’m a bit late—my WiFi was out yesterday!

The following quote is from Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon, “Besieged.” Copyright©️ 2017 by Diana Gabaldon, all rights reserved.

“Consumed by curiosity, Grey got up and opened the secretaire. Sure enough, there was a small stack of written pages, neatly bound with blue tape. The page on top was a title page—evidently she did mean it to be a book. It said, simply, My Life.
‘A memoir?’
Tom shrugged.
‘Dunno, me lord. None of the servants can read English, so they don’t know.’
Grey was torn between amusement, curiosity, and a certain unease. To the best of his knowledge, his mother had led a rather adventurous life—and he was well aware that his knowledge of that life was limited, by unspoken mutual consent. There were a lot of things he didn’t want her to know about his own life; he could respect her secrets. Though, if she was writing them down…
He touched the manuscript lightly, then closed the lid of the secretaire.”

[> I won’t keep a very personal journal because once it’s written down you’ll never know who might read it. Not everyone is as honorable as John. I love his Mom and Minnie too, Diana! -- Kathy in PA, Thu, October 12 2023, 13:17:57

[> We are blessed with journals from ancestors. Nothing really personal, just a few lines every day or so about who came to visit, a remork on world events, day to day harvest and shopping. I never wanted a diary sort of thing. I agree that things written down can cause pain if not curated. Yet several family members journal as part of therapy and self awareness. Reading my grandfather's excitement over the end of the war or my mother's engagement was pretty special. -- kgp, Fri, October 13 2023, 7:30:07

[> While cleaning out a closet before painting, I found a box of my "memorabilia," including old autograph books, a couple of diaries/journals, etc. I was a decidedly boring tween/teen! :-) -- DianaH, Fri, October 13 2023, 9:36:17
