The following quotation is from Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon. Copyright 2021 All Rights Reserved. Chapter 8 Visitations

“I spent a great deal of time thinking, ken,” Jamie said conversationally, tilting his head toward the creek, “when I lived as an outlaw after Culloden. Out under the sky, listening to the voices ye hear in the wind. And I would look back, wondering at the things I’d done - and not done - and thinking what if I’d done it differently? If we’d not chosen to try to stop Charles Stuart . . . it would have been different for us, at least, if not for the Highlands. I’d maybe have kept Claire by me. If I’d not gone to fight Jack Randall in the Bois de Boulogne, would I have two daughters now? He shook his head, the lines in his face deep and his eyes dark with shadows.

“No man owns his own life.” he said. “Part of you is always in someone else’s hands. All ye can do is hope it’s mostly God’s hands you're in.”

[> Jamie is so philosophical and, mostly, accepting of his life choices and consequences. It's also possible that he would have lost Claire during her pregnancies. She almost died with Faith, only Master Raymond was able to heal her. She also talks later of her pregnancy with Bree being dangerous. Would she have survived without modern medicine? -- DianaH, Thu, June 08 2023, 10:33:39

[> [> It seems no, to me. Though she is such a warrior, pregnancy wasn’t one of her easily doable things. It is hard not to think about the “what ifs” but mine are sure a lot less dramatic than Jamie’s! -- Kathy in PA, Fri, June 09 2023, 2:46:38

[> [> [> I agree - she had a hard time getting pregnant in the first place. Didn't help that Frank turned out to be sterile. But given the times - I think she would have died during pregnancy or delivery, if not from infection afterward. -- kgp, Fri, June 09 2023, 6:46:27
