My main concern is the dependency of the media on advertising, with television it seems especially harmful. People are placed into broad categories that t.v. networks can sell as audiences for products that need to be advertised to specified groups of people. This simple fact in itself is very powerful and very destructive I think.

So I still watch movies, some I think are just as bad as television, some I find very enjoyable, and I don't just mean independent films. There's product endorsment in movies, and ads before them sometimes in theaters, but I think the effect is insignificant compared to television. I also don't feel all that negatively about video games per se.

I think one of the strongest ways you may be helping your family break free from television is by offering a dedicated example that they can recognize over time, and that you don't have to give in to the social pressure to watch television.
