Subject: letting t.v. stay off & stuff

thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. it all remains to be seen. football season hasn't begun, yet... but it's getting close. the pressure will mount. they seem to be watching more movies and playing more videos. i can't help but wonder if that's preparation for turning it back on, or if i'm being too sensitive.

jonathan, i think the best commercial is worse than the worst t.v. show. there are too many ways that they contribute to bad self-images, self-destructive behaviors, and twisted but psychologically designed ways of thinking.

i don't mind watching a movie (as opposed to movies all night, every night...) if it's not too violent and full of irrevocable tragedies. But i much prefer going and having a bonfire at the beach (like we did last night, for the first time in a long time... and i loved every minute of it... until my son's best friend got sick and had to be taken home... you'll love this... probably because of the pollution in the water!!! isn't that sad? san diego thinks it is american's finest city... and yet we have such polluted water...)

i could be easier-going about the videos if they weren't so very hideously violent. of course the boys think they have to play shooting and decapitating games which i think are atrocious. i'm easier going about silly things like mario cart and other keystone-cops type of racing games. the thing is... in order for it to appeal to the boys, it has to have some element of seriousness and challenge and competition... especially the competition.

my daughter is much more content with the less violent games, and like me, finds the bloody, murderous games to be nauseating. i think it is mostly a gender thing. i really do, and for the first time in my life, i'm starting to think it may be really important to allow the separation of gender roles to exist. ( i can't help but wonder what you think about this... jonathan, rev? syntaursus, i have not lost my pride in womanhood. i am simply realizing that there is a healthy line between the genders that helps us to stay balanced and strong in our own talents and convictions.)

so i will strive to accept it, if football gives way to cable viewing, at least it won't be freddy and whatever his name is... (those horror shows...) or the terminator or some other blow-em-up-pers... but i'm not going to hunt down the cable company to turn it back on, for them either. grin!
