HULLO, T Pryme!

I may not agree with you, BUT I do understand what you're saying. TV is entertaining when you are stuck in the city or in a cold area . . . Then again, SO ARE BOOKS! TV can teach you some things, but it can't teach you everything. It cannot teach you how to read and it certainly can't teach you how to deal with REAL people. TV news can make all the horrible stuff that happens seem 'entertaining', it can make events seem irrelevant, or it can take irrelevant news and make it seem relevant causing many people to otherwise be apathetic towards those events or be paranoid that the world is worse off than it really is. The point is, it can really distort & limit one's thinking and view of the world.

As for violence, you are right. It can't MAKE people violent . . . but it can make violence seem to be an acceptable way of solving problems in the real world. TV can con people more & more into accepting violence and perhaps draw them in to join in the violence, or cause them to slowly become uncaring towards the fact that it does happen. That makes for a very SAD society!

I think that the books which show that acts violence & murder (etc.) without showing that those acts have serious consequences are total tripe and should not be read.

However, classic stories often contain morals that most TV shows often lack. Also, classic stories can give you a much more realistic glimpse into the thoughts, feelings & lives of the character. Another thing, TV does a poor job getting across a morals & virtues, and is VERY poor at its attempts to accurately illustrate abstract concepts & themes (peace, love, death, life, work, war, God, etc.). Anything that is ultimately important to human beings is put (literally) into a box; and many people buy into it and accept it as being 'all there really is' to reality . . . But life is so much more complex than the things which can be portrayed on the TV screen.

In some cases, it may not be the person who wrote the script, or the actors, or the director, or anyone that helped to make the show or movie . . . it may be that the only problem lies in the fact that the medium which is used, is far too limited and biased in what it can do. In that case, it is the medium (not the message) that is the problem.

I don't know if you understand all of this, but if you find it even somewhat interesting, you may want to look into it further. If not, well, that's up to you.
