While I imagine some of the effects are generated by their producers, there are things that the editors fail to note or even mention... maybe that they don't see.

For instance, on the episode you mention: Smiling Victor is upstairs, encountering the ghostly presence of the woman, and begins to speak to her. An off-camera voice is barely audible but present. I recorded the voice and processed it into my computer... nada. Can't understand it. It could definitely be real, or could be manufactured by speakers planted in the room. It is directional (about 75% of the sound is in the right front channel). However, if you recorded (as I did), watch the hand-held camera's view screen as he begins to look around the room. The firs sweep to his left shows his mounted camera and the attached lights. The sweep to the right shows an image on the camera akin to .... a blank, white, female (distinctly female features) face. Later, just prior to being able to hear the voice, the sweep back to the right reveals the face again, closer and more detailed than before. It could be a trick of light and shadow, but if they are time-edited sequentially (unlike screaming-girl's episode in the upstairs where she goes from holding camera 4 to 2 and then back to 4 in three edits) then there is nothing we could see in front of him that would cause such a reflection.

We have spotted other anomolies in the show, such as the visit to the house that Alisteir Crowley inhabited for awhile in Italy. While a narration of the houses gaping entrance is taking place (translated from the groundskeeper's native Italian), a black shadowy object flies out of the window opening of the house and straight at the groundskeeper's face, narrowly missing his left side and disappearing instantly. It could have been a giant cockroach, but the keeper didn't even flich....

And on Mtv's Fear, the episode where a group spends the night in a haunted plantation, a girl is dispatched to lay on the bed of the dearly departed for a period of an hour. While she lay shivering under the covers, the door to the room mysteriously slams, jarring the whole room. Now... I thought to myself "HOW HOAKY!!". But again, I taped it... and if one carefully views the tape...
The door slams suddenly, there are no other figures about the room or near the doorway, from which infrared light streams. In the upper left corner (our POV) a swirling, darkly mist about 5 feet long dissipates into the shadows. I, my wife, and her friend (half a state away) watched this in awe.

Makes you wonder what we're missing by not getting to see the videos in the handhelds the unlucky simps are carrying, and what other non-existant things cross their darkly night-lenses.

I welcome your feedback to these lengthy comments.
