I agree that there may be some items caught on tape that the producers may not be aware of, but we'll unfortunately never know. It is the curse of the editing room. No matter how smooth the cuts between shots seem, or even that no time at all is lost....it is. They have to fit a whole night's (or two) filming into an hour or two show. This includes commercials, so now we're down to about 43 to 1 hour a 35 minutes of actual footage. We're not done yet, they still have to fit in all the interviews with the families & friends, the background stories from the "experts" and then any little re-enactments they use. Let's review, several hours cut down to several minutes. This means that seconds are always be cut here and there, hence the "move-it-along" theory. Keep it moving so the viewing audience doesn't get bored.
I believe that these shows are entertaining at times, but they don't deserve any real credit. The producers are in it for one thing...ratings. Boring people who just walk around will not bring the ratings in. A bunch of easily scared, very nervous people who hear a door close then go screaming for half the show for their mommy...will get ratings.
Bottom line is this, you aren't gonna get a good, true account of what happens on an "investigation" by watching any of those shows.
