Point well taken, I know that by Bush wanting to win another 4 years is very obvious, but its just too bad that he cares about that more than many things, when doing whats right is important. Going with the will of the people isn't always good, especially when this majority is sucked into the visual graphics on CNN and the flags hanging from the doors. In some ways it is peer pressure to wave the flag. For instance, if everyone on the block has a flag up and your door doesn't, many people in that situation would feel out of place and put one up. This sounds silly and trivial, but in many ways the support of this war is affected by others' support. I also feel that the whole system of needing to look so strong is making us look very stubborn. For instance, at The Hague, where an international council is assembled, the U.S. continues to refuse to be a part of it because they do not want American war criminals convicted, even saying they would bomb the Hague if any were convicted. We set ourselves above everyone else, not only with this international council, but with environmental treaties, the useless formation of the missile defense system, and simply implying that an American is more important than any other individual. For instance, when attacking the taliban, 5 american soldiers or so (not exactly sure, but definitely less than 10) were killed, but many, many more taliban and northern alliance troops were killed. But those 5 American soldiers were on the front page of Newsweek, and nothing was mentioned of the hundreds or thousands of other troops killed. Again, we put these 5 people up on a pedestle above all other humans that died. It is also too bad that our errant bombings (i know of two, one that killed Canadians and one the bombed a wedding) are quickly apologized for, but also backed by the excuse that we are at war, and collateral damage is not only acceptable but expected. It would be similar to have a country come to the U.S., tell us our government sucks, and start bombing D.C., killing innocent civillians. Many think of middle easterners as bloody thirsty bastards, while at the same time they must think the same of us, since the only contact they have had with Americans is with the US army coming to them and killing villagers. But its ok, it was just collateral damage.
