Kalea smiled down at the child and wolf cub curled in front of her on the horse. Dante's question troubled her for a moment, and she hesitated, lifting her eyes to look ahead through the trees. And through the dark boughs she could see the peaks of the Hedrons, the snow there glimmering bright silver-white in the moonlight. A thrill of anticipation tingled through her, and her adventurous spirit responded with a rush of warmth. Home.
::Yes, Dante....:: she said quietly, gently stroking the dark hair back from the boy's forehead. ::We're goin' home.::
She glanced over at her sister, who sat upon the grey stallion. ::You're right,:: she agreed, and her excitement was evident in her voice. ::Such an adventure! Our very best yet! ...Nashy, d'you think that...well, maybe if it's nice out East, that maybe...we could get some more Jellicles to go? I mean, it's so dangerous for us here all the time, and if it's better over there...do you think?::
Wesimbi looked neither to the left nor to the right, striding quickly through the trees and wishing with all of his might that he was winging free over some mountain peak instead of leading a group of renegades over the Forbidden Mountains. The last thing he desired was to be a part of such an upheaval; it was his duty, his life's purpose, to maintain the status quo.
What a bother, he thought miserably. Untold power at my command, yet I am powerless to prevent a human and his patchwork clan from crossing the mountains. I, who have turned back entire armies, suddenly called to stand aside.
He could feel the keen gaze of the Cheysuli warrior upon him, but chose not to acknowledge it. With every step closer to the pass, the Guardian's heart grew more heavy.
