Angie barely heard the Silent Paw's words above the language in which they were spoken. Spoken so smoothly and fluently, the words filled her mind, echoing vastly down the forgotten paths of her memory. And one word in particular leapt out at her, as though written on her mind in letters of fire:
(istiban)
She knew what it meant, of course---shadowed star, with the connotation of a great and glorious light purposefully hidden. But what, she wondered, could that possibly have to do with her?
(does she cry)
(istiban)
(is she sad)
"That's not my name," she blurted sharply, tearing her eyes away from the picture the Silent Paw had drawn in the dirt at her feet. "It's not. I don't know where you heard that, but it hasn't got a single thing to do with me. I'm Angie, okay? Angelina. And don't you forget it." She jabbed a long finger into the Silent Paw's furry blue chest, lip curled defiantly.
"And I'll tell you another thing, so just you listen. We don't need you. Especially me. Those two dimwits back beneath the rock may need some protection, but I sure as hell don't. So tag along if you want, but I'm in charge, okay? If you don't like it, you can leave. You haven't got any real reason to hang around, anyway. Trust me, you...you wouldn't like our Silent Paw very much." A devilish grin surfaced on the girl's grimy features. "She's not your type."
In the back of Gwenneth's mind, a tiny bell of warning sounded. But she was far too exhausted to abandon sleep just then, and merely stirred in her boy's lap. Her tail brushed against the soft fall of Alexis' hair, close at hand.
