::Huh? Wha?:: Gwenneth sat up groggily, blinking rapidly to clear her eyes. The voices of Alexis and Angie floated into her mind and she was instantly wide-awake and listening to the conversation that the young women imparted to herself and Monet.
::That was good!:: Angie told Alexis, and immediately jumped right in.
"Did you actually think we'd just leave you laying there in the woods with a bump on your head?" she asked derisively, leaning back comfortably against the moist wall of the cave. "Or take you back? We got you away from him. He was coming to find you but we were there first, and got you away before he knew. Besides, we didn't want to hang around there anymore than you did. So we left, and took you with us. He's gone now, guy. We're safe."
Jeff scooted sideways, moving away from Alexis's arm, looking suspiciously from one g.irl to the other.
"Safe?" he asked quietly. "You... you got me away?"
"Sure we did," Angie said, c.racking a few knuckles absently. "Why else would we be hiding out in a soggy hole?"
::We've done our best,:: she told Alexis, Gwenneth, and Monet as the boy fell silent and looked down at his still-bare feet. ::If he still wants to be a butthead, it's not our fault.::
Gwenneth's every muscle tensed. It seemed that every single part of their haphazard plan was hanging by a thread, and dealing with these threads one by one was wearying on the mind. She awaited her boy's reaction.
Jeff studied his dirt-encrusted feet. He wanted so badly to believe these g.irls, to believe that they cared and that he really was safe. But could he really trust them? He had nothing against the younger g.irl, surely, but Alexis...
Quite suddenly, the boy found himself entirely fed up with his own attitude. He had been in trouble, and these two had obviously rescued him, and he was wondering if he could trust them! Mentally, he punched himself in the gut. Grow up! he admonished himself.
For the first time in days (perhaps even weeks), Jeff felt himself relaxing. He heaved a long sigh, breathing out all of the tenseness and trouble that had hung over him. When he looked up again, his eyes were clear, and he was actually smiling, teeth gleaming whitely in a grimy face.
"What now, then?" he asked.
Gwenneth's joyous laughter filled the minds of Alexis and Angie. But strangely, as she smiled wryly back at the boy, Angelina found herself feeling like dirt. They had won the boy's trust, but through a lie. What would he think of them when the truth was finally revealed? She shook her head and stubbornly put the thought from her mind. It was no matter to her, anyhow, what he thought; she didn't care, either way.
So she told herself.
