Hmmmmm makes me chuckle ;)

When I was growing up the local copper used to give us a clip round the ear if he caught is misbehaving. Similarly, if I misbehaved at school I got the cane or the belt - ho hum, I learned to respect the teachers.

Nowdays the copper would be taken to court for slapping a hoodie or any of his gang harassing folk going into the local shop. The teacher has to go into "yoghurt knitting mode" and understand why the kid is being unruly.

Of course, it's only the JA who ever used any form of physical punishment. It's not de-rigeur now but of course everyone forgets the general acceptance of it in wider society for generations just to have a cheap dig ;)
