There are many other ways of shortening the competition:

* Imposing entry limits
* Forbidding people from entering Beginners and Intermediates in the same discipline
* Not having a semi-final for the combined Advanced competition (instead taking the top 3 from each final). This one alone would save around 30 minutes - about the same as the increase in time due to the new-format team match.

Paradoxically, I also believe that _reducing_ the number of people in each heat would have the effect of speeding up the competition. This is because:
* Each heat would require less music so, even though there would be more heats, each round wouldn't take much more time.
* The judges woudn't be desperately looking for numbers to fill in their sheets. This would lead to greater uniformity in the judge's opinions, and would allow a larger cut to be made to the following round. (Last year, we had to have a couple of extra rounds in some of the competitions, due to not being able to recall the desired number of couples.)

Last year, we had one of highest number Offbeat entries in recent years - I think that it would be unwise to assume the same number of entries in future.
