From LP:

Chaz shuffled into the living room, resplendent in her baggy flannel pajama pants and faded t-shirt. She scratched at her scalp as she yawned, heading towards the sofa where Savannah was already perched.

“Ahhhh….” Chaz stretched loudly, “What time is it?”

“Oh, good afternoon Savannah. Why, I see that you are on the telephone, I’ll just be quiet and let you finish your conversation.” Savannah’s tone was sweetly conversational and she smirked into the receiver in response to something the person on the other end said. Chaz made expressive faces behind her sister’s back in reply.

“Who ya talking to?” Chaz flopped against the back of the sofa, leaning over and peering at her sister who was sitting under a mound of papers and her laptop, which Savannah was trying to get working correctly by pushing the keys harder and more aggressively each time.

Savannah heaved a small sigh, “I’m talking to Alex. His stupid program won’t work.” Savannah emphasized the last into the phone receiver, then scowled at the computer some more. “It is SO your program’s fault…you what? Beta version!? Well just treat me like a red-headed step-child!”

Chaz laughed as Savannah’s scowl deepened. She heaved herself up from her slouched position at the knock on the door, making faces at Savannah yet again when her sister shooed her towards the sound.

“Tell Alex I said hi!” Chaz gushed--mostly to get on Savannah’s nerves--as she pulled open the front door. “Heya Sully. My, everyone’s up early today.”

Sully laughed as he walked into the house, “It’s like 4 o’clock.” Chaz turned to look at Savannah for confirmation with a slightly surprised look.

“Some people work for a living,” Savannah stated dryly, then let out a few choice curses as her program crashed. “I didn’t do anything! It’s your crappy software!” She pulled the phone away from her ear to stare at it in anger. Faint laughter could be heard emanating from the other end of the line.

Sully quirked a brow at Chaz and inclined his head towards Savannah. “What’s up with her?”

“Oh you mean today?” Chaz gave her sister an overly sweet smile, pilling on the cheesy sentiment, and Savannah was sorely tempted to throw the cordless phone at Charlene in response.

“I’m trying to get this thing to work with the “upgrade” I was talked into adding,” Savannah emphasized her words into the phone again, despite the fact that she had been put on hold, “I’ve gotta teach my techniques to some Mayo post-doc as part of the grant they gave me, so Alex better hurry up!” Savannah chuckled a bit wickedly at the apologetic reply she received from the phone and Sully laughed slightly.

“Gimme the phone, I’ll get that boy to snap to!” Chaz strode over to Savannah, tugging the phone from her sister and setting forth with her “charm.” She had always loved flirting with the future doctors when she had visited Savannah at medical school and had become rather adept at her tactics while practicing on her sister’s friends.

Savannah shook her head slightly at both Chaz and the uncooperative technology, “Playing hooky today Doc?”

Sully chuckled. “All my staff ran away.” Savannah’s eyebrow rose in curiosity and Sully continued, “India had the day off, and I had no patients scheduled for this afternoon.”

“Ahhh, I see. So what brings you out to my humble abode?”

“Weeellll…” Sully assumed a devious expression as he walked over to Savannah with a purposeful swagger. Savannah rolled her eyes as she smirked, amused by his antics. Sully shrugged lightly and grinned, wondering if laughter was really the reaction he’d played for.

“Actually, I was wondering if I could raid your pediatric texts. That is, if you have any.”

“Hmm…they’d be in the library—a.k.a. the dining room—if I do.”

“Thank you very much,” Sully said, raising a hand slightly in appreciation as he headed into the “library.”

“Here. For some reason he wants to talk to you over me.” Chaz shook her head in disbelief as she thrust the phone back at Savannah.

“Yeah, mmhmm…no. No. Uh…nope. No. No. I told you this thing didn’t work!”

Chaz snickered at Savannah, who chucked a well-aimed pillow at her in reply. Sully returned to the living room as Savannah gave an exasperated groan, hanging up the phone and throwing another pillow at her still snickering sister.

“No luck, huh?” Sully asked, his fingers interlaced with the pages of a book to hold the places of interest.

Savannah sighed, “Nope. It’s really not too big of a problem, it’s just an annoying glitch that’ll make collaborating with whomever Mayo sends a bit more time consuming ‘cause I’ll have to do all the manipulations without the snappy graphics.” Savannah shrugged and Sully gave a small chuckle.

“So you got a new grant, huh?”

“Yes! Thanks to my Journal article and some persuasive former mentors.” Savannah smiled broadly; the influx of funds would allow her to expand her research and hire a PhD candidate as an assistant, and all she had to do was share her techniques with someone from Mayo who would be handling that end of the project collaboration.

“What about you, what’dya have there?” Savannah asked, nodding towards the book Sully had found.

“Oh, just a few case-studies on ulcerative colitis. I’ve got this patient whose symptoms seem to indicate that as a possible diagnosis.” Sully held up the maroon-bound book to show Savannah the cover and she nodded.

“Savannah, I need a job!” The newspaper rustled loudly in protest as Chaz’s hands dropped resignedly into her lap, her face showing that the perusal of the paper had yielded nothing worthy of alleviating her current state of joblessness.

“That’s for sure.” Savannah smirked and Chaz rolled her eyes.

“I’m serious. But there’s nothing even remotely interesting in this classified section.” Chaz shook The Stampede at Savannah and Sully as an added stress to her words. “I mean, listen to this stuff… ‘Wanted: nanny for triplet seven-year-old girls. Ability to cook a plus.’ ‘Housekeeper needed, Mondays Thursdays and Saturdays. Must like pets and know how to use vacuum cleaner.’ The Studs’ florist is hiring. So is the Local Cinema and the Studs’ Brushless Car Wash. Sheesh it’s like depressing-job central around here.”

“Oooh, you could work at the car wash!” Savannah widened her eyes in mock encouragement at her sister, who only looked at her blankly in return. Sully chuckled.

“You’ve gotta get the business section to see the better job listings. That comes out on Wednesdays.”

“Oh, great, Wednesdays.” Chaz made an exasperated noise and Sully laughed some more.

“Well if you don’t want the car wash, there’s always the bank.” Savannah said.

“Done that.”

“Waitress? Librarian? Valet parker?”

“Been there, really don’t wanna go back.”

“Rodeo clown? Or, oh! I hear the circus is hiring.” Savannah smiled sweetly.

Chaz narrowed her eyes at her sister, “Shut up.”

“And the carnival is permanently in town…see, there are jobs around here for you!”

“Savannah, shut UP! Jeeze.”

Sully snickered amusedly at the sisters and received a glare from Chaz for his mirth. Knowing what was best for him, Sully quickly swallowed his laughter and attempted to be helpful.

“Ah…you went to college right?” After receiving a confirmatory nod from Chaz he continued, “So what’d you major in, maybe I’ve heard of something more…in your field.” He tried not to laugh at images of Charlene as a carnie flashed through his head.

“Political communication.” Chaz stated, and Sully couldn’t help but snort a surprised laugh.

“Seriously? You?”

“Yes, me. Don’t sound so incredulous Sullivan. Jeeze, you people…” Chaz shook her head slightly, wondering why she had solicited the two cents of these weird people she associated with.

“Sorry, it’s just…”

“And tell him why you got a PoliCom degree, sister dear.” Savannah grinned and Chaz couldn’t help but grin back at her.

“Why, to get ahold of Daddy’s dough, of course.” The sisters laughed and Savannah shook her head slightly.

“Such a kiss up.” At Sully’s slightly perplexed look, Savannah elaborated on the scheme her sister had executed so well. “Chazzie finagled her way into getting her trust fund early by following in Daddy’s footsteps, or close to it.” Savannah chuckled a bit before assuming a Chaz-like attitude.

“‘Oh Daddy, guess what! I decided to major in Political Communication! Isn’t that great!?’” Savannah added an overly bright smile before gagging expressively.

“Hey, it worked!” Chaz laughed. “Kept the ’rents paying for college and allowed me to fund my…lifestyle.” Chaz winked saucily and Savannah shook her head again.

“Yeah I know. ‘We’ll have two senators in the family someday!’” Savannah lowered her voice and squared her shoulders in a good impression of her father and Charlene burst into laughter. “Meanwhile I had to beg and plead and appeal to mom” Savannah made a small face at the memory, “and I still have to send check-ups about what I’m doing with the money.” Savannah waved an arm around the room with annoyed expression in indication of where the money went as Chaz snickered haughtily.

“So your dad’s a senator?” Sully asked, his eyebrows raising in surprise. Both women nodded.

“Wow. That impressive.”

Savannah and Chaz snorted in unison. “Yeah, so we’ve heard.” Savannah said.

“Time and again.”

“Over and over.”

“Constantly.”

They both rolled their eyes and Sully laughed.

“I still need a job!” Chaz wailed, shaking the newspaper again to get the attention back on herself.

“I’m telling you, rodeo clown has some great perks…” Savannah spoke with purposeful idleness as she tapped on the keys of her laptop, thus missing Chaz’s deadly look of hate.

“Enough with the rodeo thing! Damn.”

“How about the new Texaroo Ranch? That’s not quite as illustrious as the rodeo, granted…” Sully grinned wickedly at Chaz, who chose to ignore his foray into attempted humor. She paused in consideration at the mention of the Ranch, having heard good things about it from the local press reports as well as Terry.

“Hmmm…not a bad idea. That’s something I haven’t done before.”

“Just have to make sure you have all your shots before you go. Wouldn’t want the poor dear animals to catch anything.”

Sully started snickering as Chaz exhaled with controlled slowness. “Savannah, if you don’t SHUT UP I swear I’m going to make you eat this newspaper!”

Sully cleared his throat lightly, hoping to dissuade Chaz from killing Savannah, at least in his presence. “I heard the local radio station is hiring. I think it’s the late-night show with “Don the Mon,” actually.” Sully grinned over at Chaz, “I know how well you two got on at the karaoke night.”

“Ooooo…” Chaz’s eyes widened in wicked amusement; a nightly radio spot would allow her to keep her early-morning wake up routine of 3 pm, and the added bonus of watching Don’s well-fed girth squirm in her presence made the radio job sound ideal. Chaz nodded slowly as a sly smirk began to trace its way across her face; she would definitely look into that.
