Subject: I agree with you on the democrats but I think one big reason why you dont see this stuff covered in the media is that most people dont want to hear the truth if its unsettling...
In reply to: Lance 's message, "I disagree that the basic American citizen has become nothing more than sheep. Generalizing about an entire nation of people seems grossly unfair to me. It's like saying all gays are swishy or all blondes are dumb." on 17:15:29 06/05/03 Thu

I think the democrats could stand up and shout the truth loud enough for Helen Keller to hear them but if its not what people want to hear then they're not going to listen.

The Clinton BJ scandal and Martha Stewart are making big headlines because thats what so many people want, entertainment, juicy gossip. Look at the way so much of the war coverage was packaged - like the first gulf war was - as a form of entertainment, like some kind of big video game or Survivor.

I really don't think most people care if the pentagon and the president have lied about Jessica Lynch. As long as she is home and safe the rest doesn't matter, it made people feel good and thats what they want. People want to hear that she was rescued from the hands of the Iraqi army, that the war is going so well, that America is the greatest and most moral country on earth, that big tax cuts are going to help the economy...even if it is all lies. Because the truth is unsettling and its easier to just go along with whatever.

Just as most people don't care if they lied about WMD in Iraq. Because Saddam was the guy who was so easy to hate and taking him out made people feel good. Sure he's missing and may still be alive somewhere, but that doesn't matter cause watching the statues come down was so much fun. The event was staged? Still doesn't matter, it was still fun to see. The war was about oil? So what, we need cheaper gas for our huge SUV's.

I do think the American media has abandoned its responsibility to report the truth and talk about things like the number of civilians dead and speak up more about the government's lies. But at the same time the people don't want to hear that, they want to hear good news, so the media gives them what they want in order to boost ratings and sell copies.

Ask people what they think of politicians and most people won't have a lot of nice things to say, regardless of which side of the spectrum they come from. Yet they don't want to believe that Bush is a lying crooked politician, even after they've heard about his military record (or lack of), Enron, his backroom deals, the economy, etc etc. If Watergate happened today I doubt anybody would care, because what really is happening is bigger then Watergate.

It may not be the only reason for the state of our country and the world, but I think the apathy of the people and their appetite for feel good, we're number one kind of news over the less comfortable truth is a big factor. I don't really think it matter what the democrats or republicans do, what the pentagon says, or what the administration admits. Until the people decide to admit some truths, ask tough questions, and stand up to demand change for the better, nothing is really going to change.
