Subject: I saw Michael Moore interviewed on Cspan today at the book expo as well...as always he said a lot of good things but one thing in particular really sticks in my mind...

He said that democracy is not a spectator sport, its meant to be a participatory event. And when the people stop participating in our political system then we no longer have democracy, we have something else, but its not democracy.

He said that when he was 18 he ran for and was elected to his local school board and served for 4 years. He said 'imagine if all these people standing out here actually ran for office instead of just complaining about politicians.'

And it's true. It's time for the people to take back our government. Everything we talk about on this board could become a reality...gay rights, religious freedom, a fair justice system, an end to wars of lies, the ouster of Bush and the greedy, decietful hatemongers like him...if only the people would stand up and do their duty as citizens. If the people educated themselves and got the facts on issues and used their votes to put change into action this country could be vastly different and far better.

I don't recall the exact figures but voter turnout is at an all time low in this country. Something like 17% of adults eligable to vote actually voted in the last presidential election. That's appalling. Anything less then 90% at least is a disgrace. We don't have democracy in our country today because the people do not participate.
