Falwell Threatens Bush Over Gays

(Washington, D.C.) Christian conservative leader Jerry Falwell has issued a warning to President George W. Bush and the Republican leadership: Stop catering to gays or lose our support.

The current National Liberty Journal, a Falwell publication, features a story ominously headlined "Christian Leaders Threaten to Abandon GOP in 2004."

The article accuses RNC chair Marc Racicot, of being "too cozy with gay groups," and says the GOP is alienating its traditional base.

Racicot met with members of the gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign in March infuriating the Christian right. (story)

Last month he sat down with right wing supporters of the Republican party including Concerned Women of America and the Family Research Council (story) to quell dissent from some of the GOP's most ardent supporters. During the meeting he agreed to meet with a so-called "ex-gay" group to hear "the truth about the gay agenda".

Falwell and the right also are angry that in early May White House officials went out of their way to host 200 members of the gay Log Cabin Republicans.

That Falwell is choosing now to add his voice to the criticism of the GOP is an indication the anger is not letting up. Falwell has been one of the President's staunchest supporters.

Almost all political pundits agree that in the 2000 election Christian right voters gave Bush his margin of victory in his slim win over Al Gore. If Falwell and other conservative Christians reject Bush for a third party candidate in 2004, the President could see the same fragmented vote as Gore saw in 2000 when Ralph Nader launched a liberal third party campaign.
