Subject: I talked to Lance briefly this morning. Here's an update about what happened last night.
In reply to: butcanuproveit 's message, "Test message for Lance" on 01:04:45 05/30/03 Fri

Last night, Lance got a call from a girl, Kelly, who is a member of the GSA at his school. She's 19. He didn't really know her at all except that she comes to meetings sometimes. He said she is a tiny girl, really really pretty, and seemed kind of quiet and shy.

Kelly said that her father had "punched her in the face" and that she was bleeding a lot. He said she was crying so hard he could barely understand what she was saying. She said she didn't know what to do. She had nowhere to go. Lance of course, immediatly wanted to come pick her up, but she said she would drive over to his apartment so he gave her directions.

Lance says that when he saw her, her face was covered with blood. She wouldn't let him take her to a hospital so he took her upstairs and he and his roommates took care of her.

At first they thought her jaw might be broken but he says she can move it a little bit this morning. He says her face was bruised and swollen, she had a black eye, her lip was cut in two places and swollen, her nose was bloody and swollen but he didn't think it was broken. He said she was shaking and crying and covered in blood. He said it was bad.

Lance told me that he found out that Kelly is the oldest of 9 children, all of them home schooled with very religious parents. They live in a wealthy suburb in a big house and look like the perfect Christian family. She said her father found out she was a lesbian 5 days ago. She didn't give any details, whether she told him, or what his reaction was but apparently this violent attack on her has been building up since he found out.

She and the older kids were planning her brother's graduation party (not the family graduation party but a party just for friends his age.) I never really thought about graduation for home schooled kids.

As part of the decorations for his party, they had put together one of those photo boards with about 80 snapshots of their brother. In one snapshot, he was with some friends and he holding a can of beer. His father saw it and said that the photo could not be displayed at the party in his house.

Her brother tried to argue about it and Kelly made the joke in support of her brother saying that she could "run upstairs and grab a few crosses and hang them on the wall" for the party.

Her Dad just turned on her and hit her right in the face. he hit her several times until she got away and ran into the kitchen. He came after her and hit her again. So she just grabbed a knife off the counter and held it out in front of her while she backed out the door, got in her car. She drove off and called Lance on her cell phone and a few minutes later she arrived shaking and crying and covered in blood. He was waiting for her out in the street.

Lance and his roommates helped her up the stairs to their apartment. They got her face cleaned up a little and got her calmed down and settled in and they asked her if she wanted to them to call the police, but she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. She was probably in shock.

Finally she called home and her mother told her that she couldn't come back home ever again. Her mother said, "You're done. We're finished with you. You're on your own. Don't come back here ever again." So that just broke her heart.

Then her brother called her on the cell phone to see if she was OK. He told her that he grabbed their Dad and they got in a fight and he shoved their Dad and he fell into the doorframe and got knocked out long enough for her brother to grab their 15 year old sister and run out. They were at his girlfriend's apartment. The 15 yr old sister is also a lesbian and they were all afraid what their Dad would do to her when he finds out.

So three kids, three really good kids with no history of ever being in trouble, who make excellent grades, and are kids anyone would be proud of, who love each other and are really close, who were just happily planning a graduation party together, had to fight for their lives and leave home in the middle of the night for their own safety because their parents are religious homophobes and their Dad is a physically abusive religious homophobe.

Lance says Kelly didn't get hardly any sleep but she went to work this morning, her face all black and blue. She wore makeup and sunglasses. She is a life guard.

The three oldest kids are going to talk to their grandmother. The brother knows about both girls being lesbians and he fully supports them and loves them. He just wants to protect them from their parents.

Lance says the whole thing really shook up his room mates. They had no idea what gay kids have to go through sometimes, even at the hands of their own families.
