Repeal Of Anti-Gay Law Has Widespread Support

(Cincinnati, Ohio) A bid to repeal one of America's most repressive anti-gay municipal laws is meeting with widespread support.

Cincinnati is the only city in the country with a charter amendment that bans any recognition of gays, gay civil rights, or same-sex relationships.

A local gay rights group is going door to door with a petition to collect enough signatures to force a referendum on removing the provision. After just two weeks Citizens to Restore Fairness says it has collected more than a quarter of the signatures needed to put the issue to a vote in November 2004.

"We're at 2,385 (signatures). That's five percent of people who voted in Cincinnati on Election Day," Gary Wright, the co-chair of the organization.

More signatures will be collected through a door-to-door canvassing campaign in coming weeks, including during the June 6-8 Gay Pride Weekend, Wright said.

Equal Rights, Not Special Rights, which fought for the charter amendment in 1993, will fight to keep it, said the Rev. K.Z. Smith of Corinthian Baptist Church which is located in Avondale.

Last month Cincinnati council voted to add sexual orientation to the city's hate crimes law. Equal Rights and three Republican politicians are fighting the decision in court claiming the city acted illegally because of the charter prohibition.
