Subject: Uh oh, I'm on a theory roll today! As much as I agree with you Drew, there are two flaws in your theory
In reply to: Drew Greyfox 's message, "I disagree. Democracy has its flaws and shortcomings, but it is still the system in which the people have the most control over their own lives (other then anarchy)..." on 00:40:06 05/18/03 Sun

First, this is in no way meant as a comment against you, Drew. You just happen to be the unhappy guy to get into my way of thinking when I had a few minutes to post when others who argued on the same line of thought got away uncommented and unobjected.

I think you cannot compare the USA with Saudi or Kuwait, this would be like comparing an orange and a yellow tennis ball for their yield of juice.

The USA claim and are supposed to be (at least kind of) a democracy, but neither Saudi nor Kuwait do. You have to compare the USA with their own claim and/or any modern western democracy. In this comparison the USA are neither much better nor much worse than others. I said not much worse than others because I think there are some facts which are actually worse, but I concede that's a matter of what you are used to. I for once would strongly object to the US system how judges to the (supreme) courts are appointed. The US presidential election system is a hoot. The death penalty is an outrage, in particular considering how many death sentences are the result of malpractice (7 in 10 in Texas if I remember right). If course there are facts where the USA score better than comparable democracies (in particular when Dubya is not president), but my purpose here is the validity of comparisons, not their result.

Also, you cannot just dispose of monarchy as inherently worse than democracy. Without any doubt modern democracy is better than antiquated monarchy. But Europe still is full of monarchies and principalities, and these countries could be a lot worse off. These are all modernized monarchies and most of them provide some kind of ethical/family values which are not subject to changing political majorities and not used for campaigning. If you asked people from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, most of them are quite happy with their (constitutional) kings and queens (maybe not so much in the UK). The Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands in particular are probably the world's most developed democracies, inspite of being monarchies.

But anyway, Bratty is wrong. It's not easier to deal with one idiot instead of millions, at least not if the one idiot is Dubya who is easily worth a million idiots.
