(Toronto, Ontario) Toronto publisher and businessman Salah Bachir is giving the city's LGBT community center three-quarters of a million dollars.

Bachir, president of Famous Players Media, is a noted philanthropist. The gift to the 519 Community Center will be used in a $5 million dollar renovation plan that includes a new addition to the building on Church Street.

"The 519 is a shining example to all community centers across Canada that the gay community can work side by side with other diverse groups to make a better society," said Bachir. "By supporting The 519 we are leaving a legacy for the next generation of people who will walk through its doors looking for acceptance and respect."

The 519 provides a broad range of services to the community. Once home to one of Toronto's most exclusive clubs, the center for the past 25 years has been a meeting place of choice for hundreds of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered groups.

Construction is scheduled to begin next May with completion slated 2006.
