Block party turns into Santorum protest

(Advocate) Hundreds of people attending Philadelphia's SundayOUT party, which is part of the annual Equality Forum, took a break from the celebration to rally against U.S. senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. In an interview with the Associated Press last month, Santorum said that if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down Texas's antigay sodomy law, then bigamy, polygamy, incest, and adultery would also be legal.

"[Santorum] is a bigot and a homophobe by any definition of the word," Mara Kiesling, cochair of the Pennsylvania Gender Rights Coalition, told the crowd. She also urged those gathered to "remember [Santorum's] bigotry and his hatred three years from now, in 2006," when the Republican lawmaker is up for reelection.

Sunday's protest lasted about 30 minutes and included only a small percentage of the approximately 30,000 people attending the block party, the Inquirer reported.
