Subject: Trent Lott was destroyed - Santorum wasn’t. The thing is - why? And a pretty big part of the reason has to be because blacks have made themselves into a political force in this country. Gays (for the most part) have not even begun to make themselves into a force that politicians feel they have to take notice of. (more)
In reply to: Lance 's message, "Is this just a lost cause. Is the media giving it ANY attention anymore? It's amazing how no one gives a damn about gays since the fundamentalis in chief took control of our country." on 12:15:56 05/06/03 Tue

I’m going to have to assume that nobody who’s read my previous posts will take this the wrong way - but I have to say that I admire the right-wing minority for what they’ve been able to accomplish.

The extreme right-wingers are a small minority in the US - yet they are in charge in Washington. And they’ve been so successful in large part because they are activists. They have beliefs they act on, and they have a vision they are willing to contribute their time and money to. They are motivated by their beliefs. They write their representatives and get all their friends to write. They keep the pressure on and they are winning.

I’m just scratching the surface of a complicated issue here. I know that. But I’ve always believed that gay-apathy has been and is, one of the primary obstacles to obtaining gay rights.

Now obviously I’m not talking about the people on this board - but I believe gays in general are just going to have to get politically active like the right-wingers have done recently, and like the blacks did in the sixties.

I appreciate the efforts of people like Howard Dean and many other democrats and some republicans. But if blacks had relied on white politicians to lead them out of segregation - they would still be waiting.
