Subject: Charley Reese

While surfing for news tonight I stumbled upon the online columns of Charley Reese. I'd never heard of him before tonight, but after reading a few of his columns I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. Here are a few quotes:

"There is a definitely a whiff of anti-intellectualism — so characteristic of fascist states — in the air. Beware of bully boys who worship the military and scoff at museums and libraries. Beware of people whose limited brains see everyone as either an ally or an enemy. Beware of people who can't tell the difference between patriotism and military conquest. Beware of people so stupid and ignorant that they accept anything and everything the political and the media demagogues tell them."

"I've begun to think, however, that there is no cure for stupidity and cowardice. Palestinian children will stand in front of a tank and bounce a stone off the turret, but Americans, living in the land of freedom, will say, "Well, I agree with you, but I'm afraid to say anything." Afraid of what? Being slandered? Getting death threats? Take it from me, they don't hurt one bit. Freedom isn't worth a damn if you're afraid to use it."

"It is really insulting to the veterans of World War II to compare their accomplishments to the short, largely unopposed ride into Baghdad. A campaign that cost 137 lives is hardly comparable to one that cost 400,000 American lives and 55 million lives in total."

"The truth is, I'm a news junkie, and I've got to get some rehab. This craving for information is frustrating when, despite the communications revolution and proliferation of journalists and outlets, there seem to be fewer and fewer facts actually making their way through to the reader and the viewer. "

I'll probably be posting some of his future columns as part of my cut and paste news, but if you would like to read them all for yourself the URL is http://reese.king-online.com/Reese_20030507/index.php
