Author : Press Release, . Beijing is modernising its infrastructure in order to increase the efficiency and attractiveness of public transportation services and to reduce traffic congestion. The Beijing One Card will be used initially for automatic fare collection on public transport, and later for electronic road tolling, utility metering, and e-business. With a total roll-out volume of over 5 million smart cards within the next two to three years, Beijing, the capital city of the world's most populous nation, is joining the increasing number of major cities using contactless smart card technology for large scale automatic fare collection schemes. Approximately 100,000 card validators, reloading and card issuing machines will be installed across Beijing. In the initial phase contactless MIFARE cards will be used. MIFARE dual interface cards will be added at the second stage, which will enable users to combine banking with transport and other contactless working applications on a single card. The project will be managed by the Beijing Municipal Administration and Communication One Card Currency Corporation (BMAC), a joint venture company set up for this purpose by the municipal government of Beijing. "Once again Philips Semiconductors' MIFARE technology has been chosen to power a city-wide system in one of the world's largest cities," said Walter Dulnigg, segment marketing manager for transport at Philips Semiconductors. "Residents and visitors to Beijing will benefit from increased efficiency and convenience in public transport, and Beijing will serve as an example to other parts of China of the exciting possibilities which smart card technology can bring to the urban infrastructure."
