Because it has been growing unlike CardTech SecurTech in the US , it now rivals this in size. It concentrates on smart cards, most of which still have contacts because the banks stick with this awkward-touse, unreliable format. However, contactless cards and equipment were also much in evidence, though not from Gemplus, the world's largest smart card manufacturer which has recently changed course to concentrate on cards and, above all, services in telecoms and finance where the old contacted cards reign supreme, and the demand is inhibited as a consequence. For example, of the 100 million or so stored value purse cards issued across the world, we learnt that on average, only a few percent are used at all, so cash will not be replaced yet and most purse schemes are lossmaking. More successfully, credit and debit cards are increasingly being made using contacted chip cards, to deal with rapidly-increasing fraud and provide multifunctionality, particularly in Europe and East Asia, though they would be appreciated more if contactless.
