[> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: I didn't attend, but my understanding is that MCO was very aware of the situation, and the Azusa committee and contestants knew the competition was not a Miss America preliminary well before the competition began. I believe an announcement to that effect was made on stage during the pageant.

AZUSA >> The city’s newest representatives were chosen Saturday night as the 2014 Miss Azusa and Miss Azusa Outstanding Teen were crowned ahead of this week’s Azusa Golden Days celebrations.

Valeria Vasquez, an 18-year-old student at Cal State Fullerton, was crowned Miss Azusa, and Daisy Hooper, a 16-year-old student from Azusa High School, was crowned Miss Azusa Outstanding Teen.

The duo participated in weeks of rehearsals and training ahead of Saturday’s Miss Azusa Scholarship Program pageant and were crowned by previous titleholders Miss Azusa Thao Huynh and Miss Azusa Outstanding Teen Synclair Gonzalez. The pair will represent Azusa at select city functions as well as in the Miss California and Miss California Outstanding Teen pageants in 2014.

I have noticed a change in California system over the past 4 years. The state appeared to be an advocate of a healthy and tone look, but recently the top slots have been selections of contestants with more of a a "USA" look (with a few exceptions).

Both images are beautiful, but I believe that the focus in a scholarship program should be fitness and health. The practice to achieve this goal is a realistic goal that can be maintained.

The USA system award is a modeling contract. Current modeling practice demands a BMI of 18 or even below. The numbers which support a BMI of 18 are as follows: If you are 5'8"--your weight should not exceed 120 lbs. This look requires a diet and exercise program that is unrealistic for most. It is also quite difficult to maintain these numbers and continuing efforts often lead to mental and physical illness.

There was plenty of disappointment with this year's California top 15 and as a result, a majority of formers are not bothering to return this year. These girls are wise and have come to realize that they can never become a particular body type without the risk of becoming ill.

They are tired of trying to figure out what the judges want, what the California Team wants, what "color" will work, and analyzing everything in an effort to find out what is "wrong" with them and "why" they are not selected.

These young ladies are smart enough to know when to move on with their lives.

I think this program has taught these ladies an important life lesson:

Sometimes, no matter how much time, money, support, and effort you invest in making yourself the very best you can be for a job can result in not being selected or recognized.

That's just life.... and pageantry.

[> [> Subject: Not a single one of this years top 5 has a "USA" look and if you think Leah has a USA look you're insane. Swimsuit is not the reason girls don't return, the top contenders always bring their A game, I think politics, or the perception of, is the number one reason girls don't come back. Also many girls arrive in Fresno with no idea what to expect, they've competed in their local and maybe have watched Miss CA but they show up and quickly realize it's a whole new ballgame at that level and that the top contenders are hardcore competitors. They've worked hard all year on every aspect of competition because they know what it takes to win. Swimsuit is a very small percent of the score but when you have the caliber of smart, beautiful, and talented girls we have in California you can't afford to give up points anywhere.

[> [> Subject: Pardon me, but which girls are "not returning" and totally decided on that matter this early in the game? Plenty of girls waffle in the few months after state, then as locals pick up realize they miss the competition and sisterhood and dive back in. Furthermore, I have yet to see one public announcement from a girl who is still eligible that she "will not return" outside of Aimee Le, who is on her way to medical school and is focusing her energy there.

[> [> Subject: Maybe the problem is instead of simply focusing on themselves and their own prep they are spending too much time worrying about what other contestants are doing & trying to figure out some nonexistent "formula" for winning. If that is your focus you will never win & will waste valuable opportunities to really grow & improve.

There is a whole lot of wisdom in those words from the parent.
I do agree with her or him on some points--especially the letting go part.
Good lessons are learned in pageantry.
