I removed the entire thread about Crystal being bashed on the national message board. When I looked at that board today, it was filled with predictions, top 15 lists, etc., and while people may not have liked her makeup or some of her wardrobe choices or her video, at the end of the day, when it came to selecting who they thought were the primary contenders for Miss America 2014, virtually every list includes Crystal. Not that these lists truly mean anything, but it is an indication that pageant fans from the rest of the country see in Crystal what California sees in Crystal - a wonderful, dynamic, beautiful, talented young woman. So I didn't see any point in focusing any more time or space on the bashing of the past. Look forward to an amazing Miss America pageant!

This was originally posted on the Miss Ohio message board and then ended up on the Guru board. I think the words are very appropriate for this message board as well.

Cyberbullying: the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person, often done anonymously...

One would think that as people mature and progress through life, that they would stop behaviors of their youth. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Adult bullying exists!! The goal of an adult bully is to gain power over another person, and make himself or HERSELF the dominant adult. They try to humiliate victims.

This site is called the unofficial/official Miss Ohio voyforum . What a slap in the face to the Miss Ohio Program!!! Most of what is written on this site is trash!... Posting negative and mean-spirited comments about young women and adults. Granted there are positive postings and comments but a majority of what goes up is just another way to bully others. I believe a few of the young ladies have this as their platform. Maybe you should remove yourself from your computer and talk to one of these women. They might be able to help you with this disease you have! Spewing out hateful and malicious comments online.
This forum could be positive! I challenge all who post on this site to put up unambiguous, encouraging remarks. We have wonderful women competing in locals and a remarkable phenom going to Miss America! Make it about them. This is called the Miss Ohio forum!! Not the unsigned refuse dump! You can start another blog for that!

WOULD IT KILL YOU PEOPLE TO POST SOMETHING POSITIVE ON HERE EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE? There seems to be one person who posts positive things and people tend to respond positively to them, but that's one person in the entire state. Surely there's something going on of a positive nature.

Yes, I realize everything isn't hunky dory and there are issues, but too often when they are discussed they turn into personal attacks on people, and almost all of you are anonymous, so there's no way these personal disagreements can be resolved. When the attacks get mean, that's when the posts get removed.

I've been waiting and waiting for someone to post something positive but I got tired of waiting so here goes.

A Brief Tribute to the 2013 Contestants who have Aged Out (Let me know if anyone has been left out inadvertently or included by mistake). Also, since we have already heard Laura Berger's parting shot and the endless analysis of it, I've chosen to focus on all the OTHER girls that we'll miss in the future.

Echoe Malone (City of Inglewood): A lot of pageant fans look down on monologues as if they weren't a "real" talent. But when they're performed by a real actress, they most certainly are. And Echoe is the real deal. She is also gorgeous, smart, articulate and extremely elegant, and I hope to see her on a red carpet someday - whether it's for a Tony Award, an Emmy or an Oscar, I don't care. I wish her all the luck in the world in one of the most competitive fields out there.

Katy Tang (Culver City): Some of you may not remember, but Katy was Arianna's 1st runner-up in the Outstanding Teen pageant in 2005. She took a long vacation from pageants, re-emerged last year, and soared all the way to 2nd runner-up and a prelim talent award this year. What I discovered about her this year was her delightful personality and a terrific sense of humor. Whatever her future has in store, I'm sure it will be very bright.

Raquel Fatiuk (Golden Gate): A truly remarkable talent that will be long remembered in the same vein as Angel Blue and Jacquelynne Fontaine. Raquel is not just a voice, however. She is a truly stunning, elegant presence on stage and a unique, interesting person. At the Gala, she said she wished she had discovered MCO sooner. I'm sure the audience agrees. As she embarks on her professional opera career, I have complete confidence that we'll be hearing much more from her in the future.

Lauren Smolka (Hollywood): For may people, the first word that might come to mind when describing Lauren is "gorgeous." And she certainly is. For me, the first word I think of is "kindness." I've sat in on or judged many of Lauren's pageant interviews and mocks, and that is the quality that always shines through. One of the funniest things about her is how often she has been cast "against type" in regional theater productions, playing everyone from the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz" to Amber Von Tussle in "Hairspray." Clearly, this girl can act! Look out Broadway and Hollywood (the industry town, not the pageant) - Lauren is ready to charm her way into your hearts.

Megan Wisler (Orange County) - Another dazzling beauty who has the unique ability to make everything she does on stage look effortless. She reached new heights in every area of competition this year, and I can hardly wait to find out how many more languages she can sing in. Personally, I can't wait for the Portuguese-Hebrew-Bengali-Urdu number she's planning for her farewell. OK, I made that up, but wouldn't it be funny if she took it as a challenge and actually did it? I would never bet against this girl; I think she can do anything she sets her mind to.

Ashley Newman (Sacramento County) - A truly dazzling newcomer who works as a teacher - in a juvenile detention facility. Her talent was fabulous, her wardrobe was great and she dynamic stage presence. Ashley certainly proved to be one of the outstanding "rookies" of the year. Word is that she has seven - yes, seven - job offers to choose from, which means once she makes her final choice, and they fill the rest of the positions she was offered, she will have singlehandedly reduced the state's unemployment rate by 0.3% Thanks, Ashley!

Christina Alcaraz (Sierra Nevada) - As a judge at the first local she ever won, I've been following Chrissy's pageant career ever since. In the next edition of the dictionary, they may use her picture to illustrate hard work and perseverance, never more so than this past 2 years. She has always been a contestant in search of the right song, and this year she found it in "I Dreamed A Dream." She also was instrumental in introducing Lorna Jane to the MCO. WHile the final outcome may not have been all she hoped for, the journey proved to be nothing short of spectacular.

Courtney Trouten (South Counties) - Another incredible hard worker who faced the challenge of an ankle injury (less than ideal for a ballet en pointe dancer), not to mention a challenging full-time job. Nonetheless, Courtney gave her preparation her all and delivered on all counts. I think of her as genuine, funny, down-to-earth and completely committed to everything she attempts. Her self-confidence grew by leaps and bounds this year, and that, more than anything, may be the most important pageant legacy any contestant could hope for. The sky's the limit!

Annie Wilson (Southland) - Georgia's loss was California's gain, as the fierce and fabulous Annie Wilson hit the stage every night at Miss CA. From her soulful, jazzy vocal performance, to her commanding confidence and gorgeous smile in swimsuit and evening wear, Annie looked every part the star. And to think that all came about while she was finishing her master's degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology! Say that fast 3 times. Annie planes to pursue her Ph.D. in that field and work as a consultant to large corporations looking for ways to identify problems in their work environment and fix them. So someday in the future, if your job suddenly gets more enjoyable, you may have Annie, or someone like her, to thank.

Congratulations to all of our pageant "grads". You have all contributed to the Miss California program in your own unique way, whether you competed for one year or several. I think I speak for many people when I say you will be missed.

And one final farewell - to Miss California 2012 Leah Cecil, who found new and ever more creative ways to be a state titleholder and in the process practically redefined the job and set the bar ever higher for Crystal and those to follow. While the Miss America judges didn't see it, everyone in California certainly sees that you are one of a kind, and very, very special. Fortunately, you will be back next year in charge of the Duke of Edinburgh program, so we don't truly have to say goodbye.

So who were your favorite newcomers to the Miss California stage this year? My list includes first time contestants and contestants making the transition from Outstanding Teen to Miss for the first time. (I'm leaving out a couple of first timers who aged out - Echoe Malone, Ashley Newman and Raquel Fatiuk - who are awesome, but I talked about them in the "Graduates" post.)

Ariel Ramirez (Blythe) - Very spunky, fun personality. Very good talent. Nice wardrobe. Lots of potential here.
Tayler Wolfe (Central Coast) - Really liked her talent. Very pretty face. Good swimsuit. Should definitely keep trying.
Jenny Tarmey (Clovis) - Very good singer. Made a lot of progress on swimsuit from local to state. Pretty face, needs some hair help. Again, one with lots of potential.
Ashley Dennis (Covina) - Wow! Beautiful girl, terrific swimsuit figure. Strong talent. Wasn't at all surprised to see her in the top 12. Definitely deserved it.
Aimee Le (Fountain Valley) - Gorgeous, had a couple of rough spots in talent, but clearly a very good pianist. If she's not headed off to med school in another state, I'd love to see her try again.
Salisha Thomas (Fullerton) - Possibly my single favorite talent of the pageant. Great personality. If she's not on Broadway next year, maybe she'll come back to Miss CA.
Aysia Pennell (Ladera Heights) - Hysterical monologue. Pretty girl. Good swimsuit. I like her a lot.
Paige Shaw (Marin County) - One of last year's standout Teens made the transition to Miss seamlessly, with a NFT, good swimsuit and gown. She's off to Princeton, so who knows? Maybe she'll be Miss New Jersey?
Kimberly Bebo (National Orange Show) - It may have taken her 9 tries to win a local, but she obviously learned a lot and improved a lot along the way. Her talent was her best ever, and her gown and swimsuit were pretty terrific too. Bet she was pretty close to the top 15. I know she'll be back.
Jillian Smith (Northern California Regional) - Very good talent, and from what I've been told, excellent interview too. I just see her getting better and better as time goes by.
Kelsey Schwarz (San Diego) - Terrific in swimsuit and gown, and her talent performance was very pretty. One to watch in the next few years.
Adrienne Berry (San Fernando Valley) - Am I prejudiced just because she was my Teen titleholder in 2011? Possibly, but I think there's no denying her talent, swimsuit, stage presence and one of the very few on-stage questions I can recall as being really good. She's all grown up now.
Heidi Cheung (San Francisco) - Terrific pianist, very good in swimsuit and gown and so cute. ANother one with a very bright future.
MacKenzie Freed (San Joaquin County) - Really dynamite on stage. Swimsuit and gown were awesome. Talent was good, and will only get better. Definitely a major contender in the future.
Molly Crawford (Santa Clara) - Looked really good in swimsuit and gown, and her talent was extremely strong. Seems like she has matured a lot since her Teen days, all of one year ago. Definitely a Miss to watch.
Ashley Kimball (Sonoma County) - What a talent! And some really amazing blue eyes too. Has the potential to be a really strong all-around contestant.
Gabriela Garcia (Tarzana) - Fantastic in swimsuit, vast talent improvement since her local, beautiful face, and a real elegance on stage. Major contender next year.
Kara Smoot (Ventura County) - Really strong talent, and really dedicated to prep as evident by her swimsuit transformation since her local. Terrific interview as well. Should be in the mix for 2014.
Kaitlin Urell (Yorba Linda) - For someone who has rarely sung in front of an audience, she certainly knows to command a stage and belt out a number! Very pretty girl, very well prepared, and this year's experience will only help her achieve greater heights in the future.

These are the newbies that really stood out to me. WHo are yours?

I've been passively reading this blog, I would like to say a few things as a new person to this world of pageants···· I have read things like Crystal isn't being a mentor to her teen and Laura B being unkind..... Crystal met my daughter the first night in Fresno and immediately gave her cell number to my daughter offering her support and help. This shows true class and mentorship if I have ever seen or heard of it! Laura also offered words of support and kindness! I have always heard about "how close the girls get to each other" and they will meet "forever friends". It is true! I'm sure there are some negative things that are said or done, but my daughter had an experience of a lifetime and I will be forever grateful for that! Crystal is a true class act and I can't wait to see what a fabulous job she does representing our state!

One last thing while I'm in my soapbox, Leah did a fabulous, amazing job at fostering an environment of unity between the class of 2013! She truly brought them together as a group! Thanks for the memories!!!
