Same here. He has the attributes you describe in sentences 2-4. They aren't trivial. But more needed to make them really tell. That's partly down to him and partly to team context. He'll show up better if and when (as needs to happen not just for ESR's sake) the build-up play around him is less laboured. -- SW6.doc

The point about the laboured build-up play is a really good one. I've never seen an english player who wants to play one touch, give-and-go stuff, running behind the defense onto through balls. Interestingly, we are at or near the bottom of the league in both through balls and offsides (an indicator of balls played in behind). He's looked best playing next to his arsenal boys (Iwobi and Nelson). No one else seems to play to his strengths.   - Very much so (and nice to have a proper discussion with Alboy!). There's tons of data supporting that thread, including that we're the team that is least dispossessed of the ball and the least tackled in the league (by a long way for both). But we're also the team with the most crosses (by far) and, as above, the least offsides and 2nd least through balls.       - Yes very much so on the extremes. Can add long balls (2nd most completed) and switches of the ball from one side to the other (4th most) into that mix also. What is reads to me is that we've decided on a tactical plan (possession, build up down the left, lots of passing from the back, crossing) and our opponents have decided that that's just fine and simply let us do it; hence the extremities.
