Subject: Man, booms really suck!

Tristan hid his smile while watching Marz literally force himself to finish the herbal tea he had instructed him to drink. There wasn’t a more stubborn patient in the world than Marz, so it made Tristan feel a bit smug to see him down the medicinal drink without complaint. Maybe in the future he and Val could make a pact together, thereby insuring that Marz took everything he was supposed to take to get healthy again—and maybe even stay healthy, though even Tristan wouldn’t hold his breath for that.

He wasn’t surprised to learn that didn’t know what had happened between them either. Whatever the hell it was, they were definitely going to have to try it again somehow. While being mysteriously lost in his lover’s embrace, Tristan felt as though all his past depression had been pointless and unnecessary. Even now, he still felt strangely ecstatic, despite the fact that he was miles away from the high he’d experienced a few minutes earlier.

All thoughts about the strange phenomenon disappeared when Marz began kissing him, though. Tristan couldn’t figure out why he was muttering something about his kitchen…? No, his pack, which was in the kitchen…. Okay, so he had no idea what he was saying right now. His fingers were buried in the back of Marz’s hair as he was pushed down against the mattress, the expert mouth against his own spurring on the desire building up within him. Nothing in all the world compared with being made love to by Marz, and for once he didn’t even think about the door being unlocked, or their friends being only a few feet down the hall.

When the loud boom resounded from out of nowhere, Tristan clamped his teeth down reflexively, accidentally biting his tongue. He felt Marz tense immediately, and came close to pulling him back down against him, but knew the responsible thing to do was to find out what the hell was going on. He swallowed the growl in his throat and quickly followed Marz out the room, the two of them racing toward the kitchen where the others were gathered.

Even though he should have been relieved, Tristan was a little irritated when nothing happened afterward. He took his cup of java with a sullen look on his face, wishing for perhaps the one hundred billionth time that he and Marz could take a vacation from this damned adventuring crap. Just a couple days, that was all he was asking for. Just a couple days of absolute peace and time to enjoy one another to the fullest. He imagined them stashing their swords away in some hidden place, smiling almost wistfully as he thought about how they’d spend their time together.

“Where’s Erlic?” Marz asked, drawing him out of his daydream. Ravin and Corum seemed none the wiser to his inquiry, which really did make Tristan start to worry a bit. All right, so he wasn’t exactly Erlic’s biggest fan, but that didn’t mean he’d be particularly pleased to discover that something awful had happened to Marz’s teacher.

Right about then a few things seemed to happen all at once. Marz surprised him by laying a hand on his knee, making him glance down reflexively. That’s when he suddenly realized that his lover had been more successful with his pants earlier than he’d guessed—they were still unlaced, halfway open! He blushed a furious red while quickly lacing them back up, just as Rowan and Jeremy were entering the room. Like Saras, he thought there was something subtly different about the otherworldly little jerk, but he didn’t have time to put his finger on it. Only seconds after Marz’s question about his teacher, Tristan picked up a familiar scent: Erlic was close by. He wasn’t even sure why he’d noticed it when he realized there was a heavier, thicker scent practically enveloping the other man: the harsh, metallic scent of blood.

“I’m right here, Marz.”

Tristan was already looking at the door when Erlic entered. I know how you feel he thought immediately, recognizing the cold, dispassionate look in his eyes. He didn’t need to ask what Erlic had been doing. He had a feeling he already knew.
