Subject: Daytime and Feminism!!!

I recently read on another board that Sophia is being cut from OLTL and it got me thinking about the state of women characters on daytime. I'm not surprised she's being fired since she too has suffered from "Jillification". JFP took a character with fire, street-smarts and chutzpah and turned her into Sweet Polly Purebread--a "nice girl" who's sole purpose is in finding a man! After all isn't this what she did to Tea, Vicki and Nora???

I don't blame JFP exclusively, it seems to be an ugly and disturbing trend on daytime overall. On OLTL it is the women with the most negative feminine traits who are featured and rewarded--Lindsay, Skye, Roseanne and Blair. These women are amoral "bitches" who's power lies in lying, scheming, seducing and scamming others. These ugly traits have come to mean "power" in daytime's women!

Tea, Vicki and Nora had REAL feminine power!! These were working women who's success and respect was EARNED! These women had families and professions--they were independent, intelligent, decent and their strength came from the spirit of their convictions!! They used their brains to achieve and resolve, not their bodies. When JFP took over we watched these wonderful women change into pathetic victims who were only defined by the men in their life. As they became consumed with "getting their men" we watched their dignity, strength and spirit disappear!!

Unfortunately this trend continues on other soaps. Think of the most popular women--Carly [GH], Lucy [PC], or Erica [AMC]. Yes, it's true that Lucy and Erica have been sanitized over the years, but all these women have gotten by in the same way. Their successes have all been built on the destruction of others--they have left much wreckage in their paths. Their only redemption lies in motherhood--as soon as they have a child we're suppose to forgive them all their tresspasses--even though, like Carly and Blair, their behavior rarely changes!!!

The message for women in daytime seems to be--screw whoever you have to--figuratively and literally--and you'll get everything you want!! And these characters are often rewarded with money, children, power and even , love!!! Rarely are they punished [and always lightly] or even get caught!!

Sadly, on OLTL, the trend continues with the new generation--Jessica!!! Does she work??? Does she go to school??? Her only purpose seems to be in finding a boyfriend!!!

Real woman power--nurturing, intelligence, compassion, intuition--is percieved as weakness, while promiscuity, lying and scheming is percieved as empowering!! When did FEMINISM regress to this level????
