Subject: WPHT's new Saturday 4PM host

I was wondering if anyone heard the new talker this afternoon and what you thought of him.

[> Pretty awful! Didn’t anyone work with him before the show? He was all over the place. Sounded like he wanted to be a shock jock at times. He baited the audience on some issues like a 70’s talk host. Difficult to understand at times as well. He “tilted” at some pretty silly windmills. If Kelvin was the best, God help us all if Numbers 2 or 3 get a shift. Don’t think Beck, Doyle, Smerconish and Blazer will be serious competition for the likes of Walter Sabo, et al. -- Pseudonyms Uck...but maybe the next "Big Talker" should use one., 19:50:35 07/05/03 Sat

[> These contests prove that for every Irv Homer that's discovered you get 100 examples of what you listened to Saturday afternoon. It was vulgar and bad radio to boot. -- Bogey, 22:43:30 07/06/03 Sun

[> Vulgar; that really sums it up, Bogey. With some of the intelligent posters on this board, many of whom I’m sure called the audition line, I’m amazed at the poor quality of the 5 finalists. Top Ten Reasons notwithstanding, I think Surf, Vince, Dave C., Rockford, you and many others here would have been an interesting choice. Obviously, no professionals made it to the final 5, unless someone from WURD used a pseudonym. You know, that almost makes sense. -- Pseudonyms Uck, 10:24:54 07/07/03 Mon

[> [> I'm actually in Florida now (hence the quote marks around my name), though I'm flattered by your suggestion. :) However, I think the whole point of their promotion was to find some raw talent from among the regular folks of the rank-and-file audience and give them a shot. It can work... I enjoyed Birdsong's run on WDBO here in Orlando. But most of the time, the search for raw talent can leave you remembering that you're not supposed to eat raw oysters either. -- "Vince From Villanova" (My goose is cooked, thank you.), 01:54:46 07/10/03 Thu

[> PHT -- Anne, 13:25:20 07/07/03 Mon

It was embarassing for the station and the alleged host. The best way describe it is a "Grace disgrace" Maybe they will start pulling people of the street for the job as Program Director. A novice may not try such a stunt. The glorified producer strikes out again.

[> Sad, very sad. What a joke! Although I'm sure he hates working on Saturday, Dom G. had settled into a fun and entertaining 4 hours of solid talk. Now we have 3 solid hours and 1 hour that's all squishy and loose...a sort of verbal and mental diarrhea. How about a contest to pick the next Big Talker Program Director? Looks like the current one is about to "fall from grace." -- Not THE NEXT Big Talker, 13:11:36 07/08/03 Tue

[> [> QUESTION: So what do you call it when Kelvin does his guest spot on "It's Your Call with Lynne Doyle?" ANSWER: "Dumb and Dumber, Part 3." -- Comcast Executive Wannabe, 22:27:04 07/10/03 Thu

[> I'm surprised this didn't get a lot more replies than the "pay no income tax" thread. I guess WPHT has done so many ridiculous, pointless promotions that another one is no big deal. He stunk, that's the Reader's Digest version. By the way, I applied those "pay no income tax" strategies to every aspect of my life. Hey, I get two hours of Internet privileges in here every week. And my wife Bubba understands my addiction to talk radio. Sweet! -- "Number 47 Said To Number 3...", 13:55:46 07/10/03 Thu

[> What was it that Glenn Beck said about this contest? Oh yes, "AGONIZING !!!!! They SUCKED, only some less so than others." Pretty much on the money I'd say. 1210, dial up 1-800-DB-CLONE, for you "Non Spellers" that's ...... -- Mia, 14:33:43 07/10/03 Thu

[> Dang it's hard to talk on radio..... -- Sam (Bucks County), 22:20:16 07/12/03 Sat

... as I have recently experienced....

Yes I have been in the past a vocal critic of talk radio in our city in the past... yes I have listened to the painful auditions on PHT leading up to this... And yes, I have actually tried to do talk radio (as an "expert" guest recently, will not reveal where or how, but I'm sure nobody heard it).

I have been fairly inactive here recently because I have gotten involved in a *single issue* which affected my life greatly. I actually talked my way onto the radio to discuss the issue. AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH.... when the mike goes on, the words go away.... to us wannabees anyway. I have nothing but respect for those of you who are pros and read this, even the ones I can't stand:)

Needless to say my first time in front of the mike was a disaster.... there probably won't be any more. So I feel for the poor schmuks who got their shot... they are probably very interesting people in person. It does take a special talent, one most of us do not have, and one some who are pros seem to need work on. I will continue to criticize when appropriate.... if something changes and there is something new to criticize anyway... I remain a talented and opinionated listener.

[> Kelvin The Winner -- Gayle, 23:16:56 07/26/03 Sat

It figures with the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde as a judge of the WPHT Big Talker fiasco it is no wonder Kelvin finished first. She couldn't spot talent if it jumped up and bit her on the nose. Then again her producer was probably whispering instructions, comments and questions in her ear while she was judging the contest.

HORRIBLE. THE DESPERATION OF WPHT MANAGEMENT.
