The problem with that strategy is that it can come back to haunt you. An AD needs to be ahead of the curve and make sure the coach has a strong contract BEFORE he is contacted by big schools when he achieves success. This puts us in a position to keep him instead of lose him by countering another offer with an even better package, instead of trying to make a quantum leap from an average salary to a very good one. My trepidation is with a long contract and not with DW as I have stated. I think we should extend his contract now, but let's not get into the scenario where we are blinded by our own glee. I say give the program atleast one more year before we start offerring the shirts off our back like we did with Bob Hill. At this point, has DW been contacted by a big school? Even if we do pay him a tidier sum now, will that ensure he won't leave if another school comes calling? These are a few things that an AD should also consider. If we continue to improve and have a strong A-10 season next year then by all means, get DW a fat contract, a parking spot right next to his office, and 2 weeks paid vacation because he will have proven that he is the real deal. - We are on our way to being successful. I think we all know that. Bigger schools will come after DW, we know that too. It's part of the college hoop scene. We need to be proactive and negotiate a very nice contract for DW now so that when the big boys come calling we don't have to make a quantum leap with his contract in one week in order to try to keep him.
