In reply to: Air Hej '02 's message, "People are very often anti-giving when it comes to making a donation to their alma mater. Not exactly sure why, but I've frequently heard from FU alums and alums of other schools, "Why should I give, they already got enough of my money!?"" on Fri April 15, 2005 12:38:15

Shortly before commencement, I received a notice from the school telling me that I would not be awarded my diploma until I paid $39 to the library for a book that I "lost." Turns out the library really had no proof I lost the book. It was just that the book was missing, and I was the last person recorded to have checked it out. Worse, I checked the book out during the first semester of my sophomore year, along with about 15 other books, for a paper I was writing. All the other books were returned. Now I was hearing about this one book 2 1/2 years later? I never even received a single overdue notice -- positive proof that I returned the book, and that the library lost it later on. I decided to call the school's bluff. I wrote the Dean of Fordham College explaining that the library lost the book, not me. I told him him that I had earned a diploma from Fordham College, and I expected to receive it at commencement, or I would never donate a dime to the school. That would resolve it, I figured. At graduation, when I opened my diploma case, sure enough the school had the gall to stick a bill for $39 in where my diploma should have been. I was angry, but I paid the $39 to get my diploma. However, I made good on my threat for well over 10 years, before my affection for my alma mater won over. But how much money did the school squander by taking my $39 the way it did? Was it worth it? How many of our alumni are slighted for a similar chintzy amount, but never get over it?
