Subject: I'm not sure there's any basic lack of strategic ability on the part of DW and staff, it's just that the staff is young and relatively inexperienced. DW had the same type of staffs at Wagner. You couldn't judge his Xs and Os in '03-04, since the players regularly ignored him to do their own things, but there's no doubt execution was 100% better this year. It would be great to have an experienced head coach (Ron Ganulin?) as 1st assistant, maybe someone who could teach defensive tactics [remember how good Looie's St. John's teams were when ex-FDU coach Al LoBalbo was an assistant?], but maybe nobody's been available yet. Having Ray Martin assist last year suggests that having an assistant with head coaching credentials doesn't make DW uncomfortable. But I don't see any big need for a staff overhaul at this point.
In reply to: '02 Grad 's message, "In watching the last couple weeks of postseason basketball, it has become more obvious to me that while players win basketball games, they need the help of a great coach to do so. Now I love the excitement and the recruiting that DW has brought to Fordham, but I can't seem to get over the fact that our coaching staff is questionable at best when it comes to Xs and Os. Our offensive and defensive schemes, even when we were at our best, seem shaky. Just by watching a team like WVU yesterday dominate a good portion of their game w/Louisville made me question whether or not we could ever get to that point. Thats a team that is probably at our talent level, but they made it where they did because of John Beilein (and some pretty sick 3 point shooting). Now maybe once the guys get more used to playing together after a couple seasons we'll see them run some crisp offense, and play some great defense, but I still can't help but doubt that will happen. Please prove me wrong. Thoughts?" on Sun March 27, 2005 11:33:35
