Regarding the comments in the article about the Tennessee job, Travis Ford is likely a long shot. Bobby Lutz has interviewed for the job, and the other names currently being mentioned are Bob Knight and Bruce Pearl. When asked by a reporter last week about his potential interest, Coach Knight gave the following reply: "That would be the last job I'd take. I'd quit before I'd take that job." Sounds like he isn't interested, right? Well, some Knight-watchers have pointed out that at his age if Knight took the UT job it would almost certainly be the his last job and that he would indeed have to quit at Texas Tech before he took the UT job. Kind of redfines the difference between viewing a glass as half empty or half full. I recently heard that Greg Marshall from Winthrop was the leading candidate for the Tennessee job provided he's interested. Marshal for some time now has been regarded as an underrated coach who deserves a high major job. As for Knight going to Tennessee, I don't even feel thats a lateral movement at this point considering where Knight has TT, he'd be stupid to leave and I don't feel he has interested in going anywhere other than possibly another big ten job if it were to open up and they were interested in him. Knight's got a young team with a strong recruiting class coming in and my guess is he'll stick around for another 3-4 years where he'll leave the program to his son, much as Eddie Sutton will do at Ok St. (NT) -- '02 Grad, Tue March 22, 2005 12:23:43

  - Many good coaches are leery of the Tennessee job. They have an arena that holds 20,000 fans and there is much pressure to fill it, Tennessee is arguably the nation's biggest "football school"(not hoops) and they are right in the middle of Kentucky/Mississippi State/Memphis/Auburn recruiting territory.       - Interesting background on Tennessee's athletic, but I will have to disagree with you on two fronts: First, I have talked to many Div. 1 basketball coaches who have said the job at Tennessee is avoided by many potentially strong candidates because of the belief that no one can ever win consistently there(this is a reality), and I would have to continue to maintain that the effort needed to turn the program around there will be herculean - changing the athletic dept. culture at UT, the ultimate football school, while recruiting at a high level in SEC territory will be very, very difficult, to say the least.         Let me add that I don't think the job is an impossible task. In fact, Tennessee could be a major hoop power if the right guy gets the job and works very hard to recruit top players and also pounds the pavement drumming up interest from alums and Orange fans in the Knoxville area.
