  • Agreed but SJU's OOC record would have been better this year had Carroll not been hurt early in the year. Just as we'll be looking for improvement from our young players, it will be interesting to see how guys like Ferguson, Calathes, and Jalloh improve.               • If that is the case, then this would appear to be too tough a schedule for them, based on who they have coming back/in. What I like about the schedule is the creative thinking with Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Kansas at MSG, possibly Marquette or Creighton. Nice job on selecting the opponents.               • 28 is the limit, but the 28th game is allotted for the conference tournament. So when you boil it down for A-10 teams, you have 16 conference games, 11 OOC games, and 1 game allotted for the A-10 tournament. (NT) -- DonHo, Wed March 23, 2005 15:05:12

                • That is what I had heard DonHo, but was not certain how true it was. Thanks for confirming. Here is a question for anybody that might now the answer: Do the Ivy League teams get to schedule an extra game since they do not have a league tournament or do they have to leave it open in case they have to go to a tie-break playoff game? But along those same lines, I'm wondering if there is a special provision for teams in leagues that do not allow all of their teams in their conference tournaments (e.g. the C-USA setup until next season, the Big East except this season, and the A-10 beginning next year)?     • From the games that I saw, St. Joe's was at their best when Carrol put the team on his back and carried them. They won't be able to do that next year, and with their only other proven scorer being Dwayne Jones, defenses will key on him.       • Actually, Stachitas averages more PPG than Jones. Jones is a decent scorer but a rebounding machine. The question is whether Stachitas can score as much w/o Carroll and/or how much of the slack will Jalloh and Lee pick up. My bet is that the Hawks do just fine next year.         • True, but if you look at Stachitas' stats once Carrol started playing, they dropped dramatically. He started the season with strong numbers, but it was almost as if he was scoring by default because their offense struggled so much without Carroll. They will be fine, but I don't think there's anyway they'll be as impressive in conference as they were this year.           • Whoaaaaa! Lots of people were saying that about them this year. Let's not underestimate them, especially Martelli. He's the best coach (as of now) in the A-10 and they're going to compete for a top A-10 finish again next year. (NT) -- bfg, Wed March 23, 2005 11:25:01

              • I think Jalloh will step up in a big way next season, and I saw good potential from Ferguson also. A nice player. They also have a good wing shooter coming in as a frosh.       • They will definitely be in the thick of things, perhaps even favored to win it again, but I still think that it would be in their best interest and that of the conference for them to schedule a bit easier.         • For the record, gentelmen, Chet Stachitas injured his ankle in the San Francisco game. Since then, he was not afforded the opportunity to allow it to heal, so he's been playing with a sore ankle all season. He has only been practicing the day before a game since then. He put up games of 27 and 25 early in the season so he can fill it up when healthy. He will easily average 15-18 points/game next year. Hawks lose about 23 points a game with Carroll and Bryant leaving (21 of those Carroll's.) Several guys figure to improve and make up for that scoring loss. Hawks will be better, not worse.           • Come on, Its silly to say that Stachitas will "easily" avg 15-18 points. He got most of points bc defenses were so worried about Carroll. I think St. Joe's will be in the mix as usual, but I think Jalloh is going to be key for them. He made a lot of progress toward the end of the season.             • Stachitas is currently averaging 10.8 points per game (good for second highest scoring average on the team despite a bad ankle) THIS year. So I guess it isn't far-fetched that he could duplicate what he did on a bad ankle and have at least 10 next year. 15 is the worst-case scenario next year for a healthy Stachitas. Book it. Also, last year, people said that Carroll got most of his points because people were focusing on Nelson and West. Without Nelson and West, Carroll's scoring average went way up.
