It is just too convienient for my tastes. You would think that Herbert would have mentioned something like that in books that are already filled with much detail. But I think I found the reason: Computers. They are outlawed. A ship that can travel that fast must have needed a powerfull A.I. to operate. Yet, I find myself torn between my own personal thoughts on events before Dune and the way B.H. and K.A. wrote them. I would rather believe that humanity really struggled to reach the stars through many generations and thousands of years and then found Arrakis and the spice, later invented the Holtzman drive and created the empire.

I will wait and see how the rest of the books play out. Let me get this right. The Spice is discovered, the Holtzman drive is invented, and the outlawing of computers is close on their heals. This all happens very close together. Yes, too convenient. I will say I liked the books very much but, this still bothers me.
