Did you read Prelude to Dune trilogy yet? Amal is explored there, and there is mention of the orange of the eyes. The flecks could be also just an early BG reaction or offshoot?

weren't the navigation machines made on Ix? not in the scattering but due to a need because there was little spice in the former "Known Universe" the lack of spice was affecting the BG's and chapterhouse, it's only logical the Ixians would tempt the Jihad by making navigation machines.

I'm not sure about sheer, but I think it was a new thing to the HM's and pissed them off when they first encountered it. suggesting they didn't have anything like that themselves?
