Subject: Rope tow....
In reply to: NG 's message, "Re: Riding lunch trays down the ski slope" on 01:22:35 08/13/08 Wed

There was rope tow winch there but it was unusable for the
lack of a proper rope. In the winter of 74 - 75, the college
did purchase a new rope which had to be special ordered because it had to be in a continous, unspliced length of
several thousand feet. Mike Murphy cleaned and lubricated
the winch mechanism and ran new AC service out to it and it
was back in service. Made using the slope much easier, you
could simply grab the rope and let it drag you back up. Besides the ubiquitous lunch-room trays, there were usually
other objects available to go down the slope. I usually used
an inner tube because it tended to dig in less and you could
easily get up to speed with it although you didn't have
much control over it. A table was also available, good for several passengers and the legs gave you something to grab
hold of. Several sheets of plywood were usually available
and at one time, an inflatable kiddie swimming pool was
there. Three or four people could pile into that for a ride
and it was easy to take back up the slope as it was so light. The kiddie swimming pool eventually got banged up
to the point that it would no longer hold air and nobody
ever got around to patching it.
I think the rope tow was only in service that one winter.
Mike and I pulled the rope off the winch once the snow started going away and we coiled it up and stored it in the
boiler room where it would stay dry. I don't think we ever
got around to re-rigging it the following winter, things
simply became to hectic.

....Fred
