Americans may view the 2CV as a piece of C%#p, Europeans certainly didn't!! The car was in production for 42
years and 3.8 million examples were built. In the 70's, they
were everywhere in Europe because the 2CV provided cheap, entry-level transportation and the car was reliable and easy
to repair. The 2-cylinder, air-cooled, motor was
very sturdy and had very good longevity and the rest of the
drivetrain was trouble free as a rule. Americans typically
viewed the car as being nothing more than a go-kart with a crude, enclosed body on it, but at the time the 2CV first
appeared in the grim post-war era, it was exactly the car
Europe needed and many grew fond of car and kept driving
them despite the fact that their increasing affluence meant
they could buy much more expensive cars. In a way, the 2CV
did for Europe much like the Model T did for America in an
earlier generation.
