Is Anya telling him "don't" literal because she'd be obligated to grant a wish - or is it figurative because the point was she no longer wanted to wish...

Being that Anya was one of my favorite characters (along with Spike and Drusilla), I guess I always gave her the benefit of the doubt. I read it as not only did Anya not want to grant a wish, she became aware of how much she had hurt Xander (my least favorite character by far in the entire Buffyverse) by her actions, however justified, and felt a bit of human remorse. By this point, Anya was not longer capable of being the gung ho vengeance demon of yore. Sure, she could still kill a bunch of frat boys but I mean who hasn’t had that fantasy. Even then, she expressed the sentiment that inflicting pain just wasn’t as much fun as she thought it would be. Of course, I tend to see what I want to see when it comes to fiction and especially to Buffy and Angel.
