Subject: WHAT IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK! Questions from a New-bie TL Owner!

I just picked up a BLACK 1998 TL1000S with 13000 miles for a great price. It was adult owned and completely stock except for the YOSH RS3 slip ons. The following questions are for items that I intend purchase on a “BUDGET”. Any suggestions/tips would be highly appreciated.

FOR THE MONEY!

CLUTCH? What is the best clutch to use on 98 TL1000S for the money? Bernett or EBC? I went for a test ride before I purchased the bike and knew it needed a new clutch. While riding the bike, I had to let out the clutch way out before it catches. This helped me negotiate a better price on the TiLLeR.

CHAIN & SPROCKET SETUP! Should I convert from stock 530 to 520? What sprocket combination should I use. I heard that some people use 17-40 or 41 combo. My type of riding is mostly Twisty/Kneesdown roads, very very little stunt riding and some highway riding. Can anyone suggest what combo I should use.

“NOT” for LOOKS, “JUST” for HORSEPOWER! (Don’t care for the SOUND!) What COMBO (PCII, EXHAUST, AIR FILTER) produces the BEST Horsepower? POWER COMMANDER PC II ! I am intending to put the PC II because I read that it can be adjusted and tweeked more over the YOSH EMS. I rode the TILLER last weekend and understand the STUMBLING complaints at 3 and 4 thousand RPMs. AIR FILTER? What is the best Performing air filter out there for producing horsepower
BMC or K&N? EXHAUST? I read a lot of good things about the YOSH FULL SYSTEM. Does any one else have any suggestions as to what works well?

BLOCK OFF VALVES? Should I or should I not put them on? What is the purpose for this product (INTUATIVE) ? Is it to reduce the back firing on the TILLER at low RPMs?

BRAKES! After riding the bike for about two hundred miles this past weekend on some of the wildest twisty roads, I found that the bike’s brakes felt a little numb at times, not feeling any feed back. I have read a few things about converting to the six pisty 01 GSXR 1000 brakes. Do I need the master cylinder for these brakes as well or can I use the same master cylinder? I can find them used at a near by shop.

SUSPENSION SETTINGS: Can anyone suggest Frt and Rear street/track setup for the TILLER!. I heard a lot about the rotory suspension but don’t have the funding to buy the Lindermann setup or something like that at the time being.

TIRES: When I purchased the bike, the bike was running a mismatch set with a brand NEW Bridgestone front BT 012 and a NEW Mez ME4 rear. I intend to possibly match the set. What should I buy, a Matching BRIDGESTONE rear or Matching Mez ME4 front? I like tires that grip hard. What will work better BRIDGE or MEZ. Any input on this? I have ridden mostly on Mich Pilot Sports and Dunlop 207 & 208. But only have funding for front or rear tire.

OILS! Syth or Reg? 10/40 or 20/50? What weight should I go with. Upon purchasing the bike the owner told me that he changed the oil at 2500 to 3000 miles. He also added that all of the time he used a 10/40 weight but did not stick with a specfic brand just whatever was on sale.

MAINTENANCE: VALVES? Should I be planning to check the valves soon. I have saw web posting with copies from the SUZUKI Service Manuals. It states that valve adjustments should be checked @ 15000 miles. Does anyone know were I can find a USED (remember on a budget here) SUZUKI Service Manual and Supp’s?

Alittle about me!
I have been riding for the last 14 years and ridden about every sport bike out there from ZX7s, 900RRs, DUCKs, R1s RC51s etc. BUT only owned SUZUKIs. All my bikes were GSXR750s: two ’86, ‘91, ‘94 bought new and ’98. I currently own ‘86 GSXR750 and a RARE ’86 RG500 Gamma two stroke. And NOW a 98 TL1000S. I have always wanted a TL since ’97 but my loan officer said other wise=).

I apologize for being long winded but I am Thankful for your time and anticipated responses!

“SEEYA” on the road!
