- Maintenance question -- Omar, 10:23:22 08/25/04 Wed
I recently got a TL1000R. Its my first bike ever, anyways my question is what does regular maintaining requires. I know how to do the oil change, and refilling the clutch, rear and front break fluids. But not sure about what kind and where to put anti-freeze, (On the right side under the fender I see a white container, is that it) because in traffic it heats up pretty fast, also how and where to check the radiator fan fuse.
Thanks in advance.

- Petrol in oil reserve !!!!!!! -- TLS Steve, 16:34:02 08/17/04 Tue
Has anyone heard of petrol getting into the oil????
When i take of the oil filler cap there is a pungent smell of petrol, can only think it might be getting through the bore or fuel pump. I have spoken to my local dealer who is completely perplexed as I am.
I also noticed the smell of fuel during an emergency brake earlier today (soding white vans).
Any ideas would be really appriciated as I am terrified of getting a vapour lock and blowing out the side of the casing.

Anybody ever have any problems with their starter? I have a 99 TLR w/ @ 18K on her. Last week it started making a whining noise while starting and has gotten progessively louder. I stopped by the local dealer and was told that it is the starter torque limiter and needs either cleaning or replacement. Shop guys said this was a semi-common TL problem but I don't remember ever seeing it mentioned here. Thanks for any help.

- Why don't you just get an R1?? They're much lighter.... and perfect for a new rider like yourself. Don't let anyone tell you different. People will say, "high-side this and twitchy front-end that", don't listen. Find a round-about, wobble around it at 15mph in 2nd gear, and just as your aproaching 8 degree's of lean angle, open that bitch right up. You've never ridden before, but you'll be fine. It looks like one of the bolts on the rear damper failed, broke and was loose for a bit, on my TLS.
When I got her home, the bolt was still in place, but the tab where it bolts to the right side of the frame is cracked?
Is this the place where it fails and you get a new frame from Suzuki?

- Mike, I've owned a few bikes in the last few years, an Aprilia Mille R, 3 TLR's, 2 1k's and a now defunct Busa(sold yesterday) I would have to say that the GSXR1k is the best of them all hands down. The TL requires lots of work to make it potent, weight reduction, motor, airbox, shock and exhaust are the least you can, the 1K out of the box rules. I have my 03 and will keep it forever, only a slip on and a toby damper. Good forever. the hot bike now seems to be the Kawi 1K, hard to come by ,but the fastes thing going (NT) -- Gregasaurus, 11:12:29 08/12/04 Thu

Has anybody out there got a good map for a TLR with the following mods. Hermit Dragon airbox and tubes, k&n filters, full Yoshi system. I need a good base to work from before I get it on the dyno. On a seperate note, what did Suzuki do to the later TLR's? Before I made the mods I had a pair of Yoshi slip ons. So did my mate who has a 1998 TLR. I have a 2000 TLR. On a trackday I had a friend take a video of us. The TL's were identical apart from the year of manufacture, and yet they sounded completely different. The 1998 TLR had a hard edge to the exhaust note, compared to my softer sounding 2000 TLR. Any ideas?

After four years and 52000 miles+ on my two TLR's I figured it was time to go Prozac's way and trade it in on someting that handles a bit more nimbly and giddyup and goes a little better than old faithful. So I traded it in on a Honda VTX1800c two weeks ago, and lo and behold what an upgrade in overall performance it has been.... Anyway, I like the X, but will forever miss the TL!
