- Tire Changing -- Gary Foreman - www.tl1000.com, 09:04:51 04/14/04 Wed
If you live in Northern VA, my cousin and I purchased a changer. He will do a change and balance on two wheels, if off the bike for $25.
This changer will not scratch your rims. But I will say he had a Ducati in last week that when he pulled the old stick on weights off the paint came with it. But hey, what do you want from a 16k bike? Neeless to say, this changer also does single sided swingarm bikes.

I had a great time and worked on several things, but I must say Buttonwillow is a challenging track with a lot of diversity.

lsl handlebar conversion -- paul, 14:07:25 04/06/04 Tue
Hello, I had an accident at work that has left me with a lower back problem. This means it is difficult to ride the TLR. I am loathed to sell it as we have had great fun together. So I was hoping that someone out there has either done a handlebar conversion, or knows someone that has, that can send me pics. Otherwise I will have to get something a bit more upright and boring. I have tried fitting TLS clip ons, but this doesn't do enough. Thanks guys.

I know that they both have a 52mm diameter, but Ron Ayers lists different part #'s--is the angle different? Also, are the factory TL(R) bars hollow (accepting the rubber-plug-type bar-ends) or solid with a tapped hole for the bar-ends? Thanks.

Hi people,
When I am cruising at about 30-50mph in either 2nd or 3dr gear with about 3000-4000rpm on slight throttle the engine seems to hesitate and jerk slightly, almost like it fluffing around. If you give it a hand-full or change up/down it's fine. Only seems to do it under light load cruising... Any Suggetions?
Is this a stand characteristic of the TLS?
Should I invest in a TRE unit?
Thanks for you advice in advance

- Pissed off! -- Gene, 20:42:44 04/04/04 Sun
Everytime I read a bike magazine either american or english it's the same old deal about the TLR. The TLS has
been sanctified by the British press and the sometimes the American. I just read in Ride Magazine a sister mag of the big commercial Brit Mag "Bike" about the inferiority of the TLR! What is this crap???! I mean what is the problem? First the mag presses ream out the TLS and literally ruin it to the public eye. Then the TLR comes out and they flip out because of the rear damper and it's weight. They act like it is ruined because of those two issues!
The damn bike performs with more soul and gutsyness than that god==mn VFR and the constant prattle about the Mille
or even the stinking FAlco! Yes I like the MIlle and the Falco they are good bikes. The Mille in standard form is a very good bike no doubt but the Superhawk is no great claim to fame in comparison to the TLS or the TLR! Sick of it, really sick of this bad press. I am going to write these magazines and (year right!) it'll make a difference!
Probably not. I'm just amazed at how the magazines have managed to destroy the TLR and TLS. I mean now they make statements about the SV1000 being bland and not as good as the original TLS! What in the hell do they want out of these bikes??? Jesus I'm irritated. Thanks for listening, haha! Gene

- The TL's have certainly received more than their fair share of bad press over the years. I have a magazine, from '99 or '00 or something, comparing the R1, ZX9R, TLR, a Duc, and Fireblade. The TLR was the second fastest around Phillip Island... faster than all of them except for the R1, which was only a tenth or two quicker. In spite of this, they proceeded to slag it off. It was heavy out of the crate for sure, and it's a big thing to hustle through the tight stuff, but I'm yet to feel more assurance from any other bike through a fast knee-down sweeper. (NT) -- justin, 20:56:03 04/04/04 Sun
- I think everything you said here was true. But as for the blame, some of it has to go to Suzuki themselves. Yes, the bike is overweight (so am I, so WTF) and there are lots of bikes that have come out since with better handling, more power, etc, and what did the DRE's at Suzuki do about it?? SFA, except to cancel a great bike. I love my Tiller, and dread the day I can't ride her any more. It's just too bad that they never found a reason to change anything except to make the paint look similar to a GD cloned Gixxer. (NT) -- Newfie TLR, 06:43:27 04/05/04 Mon
- (Motorcyclist mag)1997-TLS-Motorcycle of the year ,(Superbike mag)1998-S wins overall vs. Duc 900 and Honda Vtr,Superbike mag-No-one who's ridden our longterm TL can get over how stupidly quick it is. It whups fireblades, stays alongside GSX-R750's and murders any thunderace it comes across, with half the cylinders and as fast as a Duc 916SS,"The TLS is a stunning roadbike to ride, just not in the same quality of ride as the 916. But hey,two days after this test I ordered myself a new blue and white 1998 TL1000R-maybe that's the real story right there." The S is lighter than a 996! (NT) -- Gary B.-Mass, 09:31:45 04/05/04 Mon
- All that bad press just makes them cheaper for those of us who love 'em! ;) And there's something to be said for whupping on folks with an underdog. When you see a guy at the track with a $20k Mille R, you expect him to be fast. When those guys get passed by the "overweight, bad-handling" TLR their eyes always bug out a little bit. Here goes: Just put on Two bros two into one, fresh filter, plugs, checked the TPS. Spot on. Haven't checked the throttle bodies yet. Problem: Bike will idle fine with idle adjuster, but after riding, then slowing down with the motor a bit coming to a light, she wants to stall when I pull in the clutch unless I tweak the idle adjuster a bit higher. Then, after accelerating, I disengage the clutch while slowing to a stop and she falls down to 2k rpm and stays for a few seconds until I tweak the idle adjust again. I probably need a remap, check the TBs, maybe my idle adjust cable is sticking and vibrating up/down farther? Any other ideas until I get her to the shop and on the dyno? Thanks

Hi guys this topic has probably been covered before but the suspension on my TLS leaves me a little tentative through higer speed corners. The bike feels very twitchy and seems to bounce around a lot which can be quite scary at times.
My previous experience has been on big bore in line 4's which although not as sporty as the TL seem to enjoy the big sweepers.
Is it me; the suspension setup; or the the bike's design.
Have others experienced the same cornering as me.

- Couple of obvious things I'll point out are: One, your TLS has a lot shorter wheel base and steeper steering angle than say FZR/YZF 1000, and GSXR 1100, Blackbird etc. so a little more feedback is likely. Second, how is your suspention? If it's stock then try Race tech springs and valves for the forks and new Ohlins, penske, or WP rear shock. Those will give you huge improvments in tracking, feel etc. Another biggie is the stock steering damper, you might want to replace it with adjustable unit such as Ohlins or hyper pro etc... (NT) -- Pat (N. CA), 11:14:32 04/03/04 Sat
- If you do everything Pat stated then your S will be transformed more than you could believe. I've done this to my S and it is amazing! FWIW I have the Racetech valves and springs, Ohlin's rear shock,Scot steering damper. While your at it get the Galfer brake lines-set up. (NT) -- Gary B.-Mass, 13:29:49 04/03/04 Sat

Commander has a few settings (Rich, Neutral, Lean) Bike is currently running in the lean position but seems to be running ok. I have both ram air tubes removed because the plastic is getting painted. His TLS is a 97 model year.
It has a the place to mount the pair valve beside the exhaust header, but it's not drilled out.
They had the ability to put one on, but the didn't.
Why is this.
Is his bike a Canadian version, or did they design the engine with emissions in mind for the future?

Back on a TL1000R!! -- Erwin8r in Los Angeles, 15:22:13 03/30/04 Tue
Well, as the title implies, I am back on a TL1000R. After months of careful consideration, I have decided to buy Greg (Ventura)'s 2000 TL1000R. Yeah, she's the slower yellow color, and she is dreadfully stock (compared to my '98 beast), but she is a diamond none-the-less and will soon be dressed to kill! ;0)
The guys got together (Prozac, Greg, The Lieutenant, Rhino, and your truly) for a beautiful, fast-paced blast in and around Ojai/Santa Barbara this past Sunday. In the midst of Busa's, Gixxer 1ks, R1s, etc., the Tiller held her own! She wasn't quite up to my usual "run away and hide" mode, but she got the job done! There are some incredible roads up there (Highways 33, 166, etc.) through scenic valleys and evergreen mountains, and although we were at warp-5 most of the time, it sure was nice to see something other than the Santa Monica mountains for a change. I got home with shredded D208GPs, sore muscles, and a smile that wouldn't quit!
A couple of observations after riding a Honda CBR929RR for a while (she's my commuter now): The TL feels A LOT BIGGER! But in a good way! The power pulses and delivery felt like home to me, and I could really get on the gas early during corner exits. handling was nto what I was accustomed to, but again, the suspension is totally stock (well, save for theh magnesium wheels). I suppose that an Ohlins or Penske are probably on the short list of mods to get done ASAP. The forks will be sent out at the same time, and that should bring the handling up to par (if anyone has any of these for sale, drop me a line!). I mounted a HyperPro steering damper in place of the stock unit, so no worries there. Oh, and a good full system is also on the short list... It feels good to be riding a twin again!!

- Congrats erwin8r! I guess you won't be selling me any more spare TLR bits eh? ;) Good to hear you're back with the faithful. (NT) -- dgrace (NorCal), 16:32:22 03/30/04 Tue
Erwin, I do apologize for selling a bike with worn tires, you guys rode really well in unfamiliar territory. Yes this is the best that Socal has to offer, we saw less than 10 cars the whole day , no CHP anywhere. I felt the tears roll down as I looked back and saw & heard my old yellow tiller on my 6. Too funny. Any of you Socal dudes need to do this ride next time around, cool watering holes to stop at and shoot the breeze. I feel good about selling the TL to an original board memeber, Mr. Erwin, put your magical touches a make her fast.. Prozac, Rhino And LT. are too much fun (NT) -- Gregasaurus, formerly Greg,Ventura, Greg,Oxnard, 17:26:46 03/30/04 Tue
- Erwin, almost forgot,The new yosh pipes are on the doorstep, no more annoying D&D noise (NT) -- Gregasaurus, 17:52:25 03/30/04 Tue
- Did you put one of the new Hyper Pro dampers on there? I think the new ones are called Active Sterring or something like that. I just called them last week to order a rebuild kit for mine and they said, "Sorry, we don't do that anymore. Send us $150 bucks and we'll rebuild it for you." Looks like I'm buying a new Ohlins.
