- Wheelies -- Teemu, 13:21:19 08/23/04 Mon
Has anybody had a problems whit motors blowing out, because I heard that Suzuki V twins have a bad habit to not lubricate the motor during wheelies which makes the front cylinder to blow out????? Correct me if I'm wrong...

- Any motorcycle will do that if you spend enough time on the rear wheel. Think about it, all the oil is in the pan when the bike is on two wheels. You pull a wheelie where is gravity going to take the oil and not to mention the amount of oil that is going towards lubrication. This condition is called oil deprivation. Ask any true stunter, he will tell you the same. That is why I will never buy a bike from a guy that likes to pull nothing but wheelies. Shoot, buying one from a racer might be a better choice. - Your front cylinder will be fine...your crank will seize. You will be looking for a new motor. (NT) -- Gary Foreman - www.tl1000.com, 08:45:49 08/24/04 Tue
- More than likely doing enough wheelies with starve the crankshaft bearings oil, which leaves nothing but metal to metal contact with no lubricant @ 6000rpm. I've seen oil pans on cars that have baffles in them so that under hard acceleration, the oil pump pick is still coated in oil. I've never looked @ a TLR oil pan to see if you could install baffles. It would probably require a custom pan and the baffles to be welded or molded into it. (NT) -- SDLTLR, 10:24:27 08/24/04 Tue
- The only engin that you should be worried about is the one in your head!!!!!! Keep doing wheelies and I asure you it will be leaking your oil real soon. . Use amsoil synthetic Vtwin oil it will stick to the engin longer and give you a little better protection. -- FBI, 14:05:01 08/24/04 Tue

Comments on a 97 TL1000S -- Pavel Despot, 11:01:43 09/17/04 Fri
Hello all.
I'm finally getting rid of my old 84 500cc bike and am looking to replace it with a pristine looking 97 TL1000S. It's got 9000 miles on it and he's asking $3400. He's the second owner and says he takes care of it.
I'm a bit concerned though as this is his first bike and by looking at the tires, it doesn't look like he's all that skilled a rider. So I'm thinking that clutch may have been a bit abused.
Anyway, my questions are:
1) It's a bit hard to find neutral on it. Is that common or could it indicate a tranny problem?
2) If the clutch is screwed, how much does a new clutch run for on these?
3) Normally, does the clutch catch almost near the end, or is that pointing to a dead clutch?
Problem is that he won't let me take it for a test ride, so I don't know how it runs. Any suggestions on what to look for?
Many thanks.

Raced Thunderhill a week ago, it was a light weekend with only 14 entries in Open Twins. Unfortunately it seems that only the fast guys showed up so best I could do was 11th. ;) I ended up chasing a guy on a Duc 999, I was better in a couple of places on the track and he was better in a couple of different places, I never quite got close enough to press the issue and he finished in 10th by half a second. Still had a good time, ran consistent 2:06's and we had a good race, big grin at the end and that's what it's all about! I also ran my F2 in 600 production and got 23rd out of 30, next oldest bike was a 99 R6 so not too bad for the ol' workhorse.
I'm going to probably switch over to TLPlanet.com, I like the board format a lot better than the voy.com stuff, too much useless scrolling on the ol' blue board. Hope to see you guys over there!

Headlights not working -- Larry(AZ), 19:20:11 09/15/04 Wed
First off, With the key on or the bike running, the headlights don't work. All of the blinkers front & back work, running light and brake lights. I've checked the fuses, checked the headlights to. Could it be the switch on the handle bar? or is there a inline fuse in the wiring. The only elec. mod I've done was, put a fan switch in, and that was over two years ago.

Ran fine for a week, but today I started it up, came back to it a minute later and the engine was running, but all the electrical was dead(lights, tach, odometer, ect.). I killed it and now it is totally dead again. Can anyone with more electrical knowledge than me give me an idea of where to start?

It was working great for a few years, then progressively became worse--change plugs-oil, NO Change--reinsert, the original--ECU. sudden change for the better....so is there any saving, booting the old cmnder, ????? any similar expeience?

Buying a 97 tl1000s in 2 days -- Eric, 17:38:23 09/05/04 Sun
For a while now Ive been wanting to upgrade from a meer 2000 Katana 750 (starter bike) to something a little more defined in its limitations. My goal is to learn a new bike for next season, and start doing amature racing on professional tracks.
What I've found here is a 1997 TLs that should get me going, but Im posting this to see how the comunity feels this purchase is.
The bike is going to cost me $2800 dollars. THere are 14,400 miles on the original parts: engine, frame, tranny. THe bike has brand new 208 tires (Dunlop). Other new parts include oil, front breaks, front stainless brakelines, battery.
The bike looks good enough to show off, but not good enough for shows. The tank has a 3 inch wide dent which is partially covered by a bra. THe bike had fallen over more than once, and on each side. No plastic is cracked, but there are scratches. Farings have priviously been exchanged for good condition ones. The paint is glossy around these scratches still. The damage does not bother me much and was hardely noticable from 5 feet away. I looked at just about every weld the frame had and found no problems at all with the structure. Every part is there, even the passenger seat and/or cover. The only part that needs to be replaced is the rear break lever, which had been previously broken, and then rigged back together. The brakes still functins and works fine, just the lever snapped and now a bolt is depressed instead of a "foot pad".
THe owner talked a lot about how people abuse their bikes. The sprockets and chain were original and I could tell, yet they do not yet need to be replaced. The owner never had a thing for wheelies, but the wisties. That is a good sign. I believe him because he didnt lie to me at all on the phone.
I was able to take it for a test drive and everything checked out ok. The engine was smooth, the sound was clean, the clutch and everything was perfect. Its the first time I felt such power. It ran great. The engine was nice and dry. THere were no oil marks or drips. The bike had also been garaged for un unknown ammount of time.
I would be the third owner. Im also the third owner of my katana so that doesnt bother me. The bike has a clean title. Again, this would be used for less than 2 hour trips and of course racing. I will keep my katana.
What do you think? What did I miss? How long do these V2 engines last?

Here is the problem. Riding down the road the bike made sound like an air rush and a skip of the engine. I stopped the bike and there was oil that had come back and sprayed on the frame. Later I raised the tank, took off the air box and and the only place that I could see the oil comming from is a tube connected to the bottom left of the air box (rider position). Reconnected and started her back up. Now the sound of an air whinning is extreamly loud and I'm not sure where it is comming from. Any suggestions out there on a solution.

Hi Guys,
I'm in the middle of changing my TL's ('97 TLS, UK model) water pump seals following coolant leaking from the clutch cover.
I've bought new mechanical and oil seals but the new oil seal looks different to the original part. The seal appears to have the same internal and external diameters but has a metal flange on its outside surface. The new part number is 17461-02F00, please can anyone confirm that this is correct?
Finally, the workshop manual mentions Suzuki Bond 1215 and Suzuki Super Grease A is to be used when inserting the seals back into the clutch cover.
Can anyone tell me what loctite / Castrol products will match the Suzuki spec?
Many thanks,
Phil Lewis.

I'd let to get $5600 for the bike. It's in the San Diego area. It's never been crashed, laid down, or fallen over. It has 9,xxx miles on it. The only thing it has is a stain on the lower part of the left side fairing. I apparently drove through something. If interested contact me at wiseguys@cox.net. - TL1000 Crankcase Pressure causing leak -- Robjota, 15:03:21 08/18/04 Wed
Ive just installed a TLR engine in my TL1000S to replace the self destructed engine (3 rd gear broke up).
Runs great but it became clear that excess crankcase pressure was causing the plastic clutch cover to leak.
Now fitted the TLR improved crankcase breather with hose from top of rear cam cover.
Still leaks slightly & when you remove the oil filler cap you can feel the pulsing pressure.
Happy the with the engine, no faults, no burning oil or leaky rings etc.
1/ Is there a well known mod for improving breathing of the crankcase of either of these models?
2/ Are they renowned for breathing problems ( I know about replacement covers, I dont want this route, the same cover was good on the original TL1000S engine).
3/ Im convinced the crankcase breathing is insufficient??
Many thanks
Rob
