Doogie, This letter was distributed at the world hunt. It mostly explains itself. It is being discussed with UKC.
Thank you, Perry
UKC Inquiry 9/15/07
In an effort to verify the authenticity of an offer that had come to my attention from a couple members I contacted UKC. The rumor I was attempting to verify was termed as a “standing offer to make leopards the 7th hound breed if leopards changed their name by dropping the word cur” I called Todd Kellam at UKC. Mr. Kellam assured me it was NOT a standing offer. However after a little discussion Mr. Kellam and I were intrigued with the story. Over a short period of time Mr. Kellam and I spoke several more times on the topic of leopards becoming the 7th breed. Todd decided to present it at Autumn Oaks at a meeting UKC hold annually with the Presidents of the 6 hound breed organizations. I offered to attend. Todd felt it best a leopard rep not be present as to allow the members to speak with out reservation. I agreed but wanted to give the 6 officers a little notice so they would be prepared. With Todd’s approval we contacted the 6 hound breed presidents. This actually went quite well and was greeted with some open approval and a promise of open minds.
On Friday August 31 the meeting was held and received quite well. UKC officials have discussed this further and have 2 points of concern. 1.) The word cur would need to be removed from our breed name. It would need to be something like TREEING LEOPARD. The official name could be something like Treeing Leopard coon hound
2.) The long hair that is currently allowed in our breed standard. While this may not be a deal breaker UKC would like to see the association visit this standard. UKC feels it may hamper our acceptance into the main stream of the hound world. UKC assured me that the breed standards are 100% controlled by the ALCBA Inc.UKC has no desire to set our breed standards or determine our single registration policy if we would ever consider opening the books. (registering dogs without current ALCBA papers)
In an effort to save time and keep this process in a timely manner the ALCBA Inc Board of Directors are asking UKC to consider the Leopards as the seventh hound breed and to start open negotiations to obtain this so we may present this to our general membership at our September 07 World Hunt. Final decision would need approved by ALCBA Inc general membership. This we intend to do by mail ballot. Our goal is that every member have a say in this process as it is an important milestone for our leopard breed.
In closing I would like to Thank Mr. Kellam for his efforts and directives. We look forward to a long and harmonious relationship between UKC and ALCBA Inc.

Respectfully submitted,
Perry A. Lambert
President ALCBA Inc.

The general membership gave us the go ahead to discuss this subject with UKC as a fact finding mission. The Officers and Board members hope to have details for the membership after the first of the year or so....With Holidays, work schedules and hunting season it may take a little longer. We appreciate membership support and patience. To me it is more important to get good information than to jump into something too quick. Perry
