This scene takes on special meaning with the passage of time. I think it's worth a brief mention in the entry for it on TV Tome.

If you are referring to the timeline in the show itself, the next episode I alluded to, "Here Comes Uncle Charly", which immediately followed Frawley's farewell episode, was, as the title indicates, William Demarast's debut on M3S, midway through season 5, the show's last season in B&W, and its last season on ABC. The episode begins with the Douglases coping with an impossible housekeeper Steve hired after Bub's departure. Uncle Charly arrives about midway through the show, hoping to surprise his brother, Bub, with a visit, only to find Bub has left for Ireland. Steve remembers Charly from years back. Charly last met the Douglases, I think, when Robbie was a baby. They invite Charly to stay. The housekeeper then leaves in a huff, refusing to cook for and clean up after one more male, so the Douglases are eternally grateful to Charly.

At first he intends to stay only a short while, then Steve is called away on business, so Charly agrees to stay a couple of extra days before leaving for San Francisco, and the sea. Then, at the last minute, he postpones his departure to attend a parent night or something at Chip's school, making him one of the family. It turns out he was a cook with the Merchant Marines, a skill which comes in handy after Steve's abominable cooking made the boys almost forget that food can sometimes taste good, besides keeping you from dying of malnutrition. Needless to say, he never leaves, and the rest is TV history.

For more info, check the entry for M3S on TV Tome.

Goodnight.
